DURHAM, N.C. ? Joy Cheek of the Duke women's basketball team has been named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Student-Athlete of the Week.
A sophomore from Charlotte, Cheek helped the Blue Devils post their most recent victory by hitting the game-winning basket with 1.2 seconds left in a 51-49 decision over Pittsburgh at the Maggie Dixon Classic in Madison Square Garden.
Cheek totaled 13 of her season-high 16 points in the second half and notched the winning points on a layup after rebounding a teammate's missed shot.
The former Miss Basketball of North Carolina led her South Mecklenburg High School team to a state championship before coming to Duke. Cheek and the rest of the Blue Devils return to action following their fall semester exam break on Tuesday when they host Utah Valley in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
