DURHAM, N.C. --- Midfielders Joe Germanese and Michael Videira were selected to participate in the adidas MLS Player Combine from January 11-15, 2008, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Duke Associate Head Coach Mike Jeffries was chosen as one of four college coaches who will coach the scrimmages during the combine. 54 college seniors from 33 Division I schools were invited to the event.
Videira, a native of Milford, Mass., is a Hermann Trophy semifinalist for the third consecutive season. He started 15 matches and played 1,215 minutes despite battling through a leg injury. Videira helped the Blue Devils with two goals and three assists as he ran the offense from the center midfield position. The team captain earned third team Academic All-America honors for the second straight year in November.
Germanese was second on the Blue Devil team with seven assists this year and he contributed three goals on 26 shots. The product of St. Louis, Mo., ranked fourth on the squad with 13 points. Germanese started 19 games, missing only one match due to a minor injury, and logged 1,313 minutes. He was named to the Academic All-America second team for 2007.
The coaching and management staffs of all 14 MLS teams will be in attendance to scout talent at the combine, which concludes three days before the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. The SuperDraft will be held on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in Baltimore, Md.
The 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine will separate all players into four teams and feature two games per day at Lockhart Stadium on Jan. 12, 13 and 15. Each team will be led by an experienced Division I coach and will be assigned a youth coach, to be named at a later date. Jeffries, a former MLS coach, has been selected to coach Team Predator PowerServe.
