DURHAM, N.C. -- After shooting a one-under 287 in the opening round, Duke blistered the Duke University Golf Course for a 15-under 273 on its second 18 holes of the day to take a two-stroke lead at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic. Senior Michael Schachner led the way with a seven-under 137 (71-66), while sophomore Adam Long fired a six-under 138 (70-68) on Sunday.
Schachner is tied for first with Jonathan Hodge (Tennessee-Chattanooga), while Long is tied for third overall. The Blue Devils (-16, 560) hold the top spot in the team standings with Tennessee-Chattanooga (-14, 562) and Ohio State (-10, 566) second and third, respectively. Virginia Tech (-9, 567) and Old Dominion (-7, 569) round out the top five.
In the opening round, Schachner shot one-under 71 with four birdies, 11 pars and three bogeys. The Libertyville, Ill., native responded with a six-under 66 in the second round, including a six-under 30 on the front side of the course. After opening with a par on No. 4, Schachner birdied No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9 to move to three-under after six holes. He tacked on a birdie on No. 11 before suffering his lone bogey of the day on No. 17 to move back three-under with four holes remaining. Schachner parred No. 18 before carding three consecutive birdies on No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 to close the round with a season-best 66.
Long fired a team-low 70 in the first round, before posting a four-under 68 on his second 18 holes of the day. He opened the tournament with a birdie on No. 1 and added birdies at No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9 to make the turn at four-under. Following a pair of pars, Long suffered bogeys on No. 12 and No. 13 before playing the final five holes at even-par with three pars, one birdie and a bogey. The St. Louis, Mo., native bogeyed his opening hole (No. 1) of the second round, put recovered with three straight birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 and an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole to make the turn at four-under. On the back side, Long carded seven pars, a birdie (No. 15) and a bogey (No. 17) to post his third under-par round of the season.
Freshman Matthew Pierce and Wes Roach are tied for 23rd overall through two rounds at even-par (144). Pearce shot a four-over 76 in the opening round, before responding with a season-low 68 (-4) in the second round. Pierce posted five birdies and an eagle (No. 9) in the second round and finished the day tied for ninth in par 5 scoring at four-under (4.50). Roach carded three birdies en route to a first round 73 and three birdies and an eagle during a one-under 71 on his second 18 holes of the day.
Junior Clark Klaasen closed the day tied for 39th after shooting matching one-over 73s (+2, 146) in each round on Sunday. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native posted five birdies and an eagle on the day but suffered four bogeys on the final three holes.
Duke also had seven individuals in action on Sunday, with Bryce Mueller and Skip Murphy posted the top finishes, tied for 39th at two-over. Both players shot 74-72, with Mueller ranking among the tournament leaders with eight birdies and Murphy among the par leaders with 24. Sophomore Jeff Edelman is tied for 50th at four-over after shooting 76-72=150. The Southlake, Texas, native had nine birdies, including four straight in the opening round, and an eagle on the day but also suffered four double-bogeys.
Sophomore Eric Schultz carded 27 pars (tied for fourth-most) on Sunday to finish tied for 58th at five-over (75-74=149). Junior Andrew Giuliani is one shot back at six-over 73-77, while junior Justin Hare and sophomore Brian Kim shot seven-over (151) and nine-over (153), respectively.
Third round action begins on Monday at 7:45 a.m. with Duke's tee times beginning at 9:15 a.m. The Blue Devils will go off No. 1 and will be paired with Tennessee-Chattanooga and Ohio State. *** Schachner has played the front nine at the Duke University Golf Course eight-under with nine birdies and one bogey through two rounds. He is tied for second in the tournament with 11 birdies through 36 holes. Schachner is also tied for the tournament lead in par 4 scoring at -4 (3.80).
*** Long is tied for seventh with nine birdies through two rounds. He has played the front nine at eight-under par with seven birdies, one eagle and just one bogey. Long is tied for second in par 3 scoring (-1, 2.88), tied for fifth in par 4 scoring (-1, 3.95) and tied for ninth in par 5 scoring (-4, 4.50).
