PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Duke duo of junior Melissa Mang and senior Tory Zawacki won two matches on Friday to advance to the consolation final match at the 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila.
The Blue Devil pair, which ranks 22nd in the national preseason listings, upset the fifth-ranked tandem of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva of UNLV, 8-2, before moving on to defeat the 23rd-ranked duo of Maryori Franco and Nanar Airapetian of Arkansas, 8-5, to advance to the final match. Mang and Zawacki will face the winner of tonight's match between No. 11 Tinesta Rowe and Melanie Gloria and No. 9 Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame.
In the first round of the All-American main draw, Mang and Zawacki fell to Hannah Robinson and Megan Falcon of UCLA, 8-2.
Mang and Zawacki reached the main draw of the championships via a wild card entry after the tandem won the doubles title at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships in August.
The All-American Championships will run from Oct. 4-7.
