PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Duke duo of junior Melissa Mang and senior Tory Zawacki fell in the first round of main draw action at the 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila on Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The Blue Devil pair, which ranks 22nd in the national preseason listings, fell to Hannah Robinson and Megan Falcon of UCLA, 8-2, and will begin play in the back draw on Friday. Mang and Zawacki reached the main draw of the championships via a wild card entry after the tandem won the doubles title at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships in August.
Freshman Ellah Nze was in action in the qualifying consolation bracket on Thursday, as the Delray Beach, Fla., native defeated 118th-ranked Courtney Zauft of Texas, 2-6, 6-0-, 6-2, before falling to 34th-ranked Danielle Steinberg of Arizona 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, in a quarterfinal matchup.
The All-American Championships will run from Oct. 4-7.
