PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The main draw of the 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila will begin on Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club, as the Duke duo of junior Melissa Mang and senior Tory Zawacki will be in action in the doubles bracket.
Mang and Zawacki won the doubles title at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships in August, earning a wild card spot in the main draw. The Blue Devil pair, which ranks 22nd in the national preseason listings, will meet Hannah Robinson and Megan Falcon of UCLA in first round action.
Doubles qualifying action on Tuesday saw the 35th-ranked duo of sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin and freshman Ellah Nze fall just short of qualifying for the main draw, as the tandem defeated Tracy Lin and Andrea Remynse of UCLA in second round action, 8-5, before falling to Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zuber of Tennessee, 8-4.
In the singles qualifying bracket, freshman Reka Zsilinszka posted two wins on Tuesday to advance to the final qualifying match, but fell to Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-2. The loss was Zsilinszka's first as a Blue Devil, as she has begun the fall season with an 9-1 record.
Mang and Nze each fell in the first round of the qualifying main draw on Monday, but continued competition in the consolation bracket. Mang, ranked 72nd in the nation, fell to Martina Banikova of Mississippi State, 6-1, 6-1, while Nze defeated Stephanie Kusano of California, 6-4, 6-2.
The All-American main draw will run from Oct. 4-7.
