PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila continued on Tuesday with qualifying action at the Riviera Tennis Club as freshman Reka Zsilinszka and the Blue Devil tandem of sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin and freshman Ellah Nze won their matches to remain in competition.
The 35th-ranked duo of Plotkin and Nze defeated Kelly and Yvette Hyndman of Georgia, 9-8 (4) in first round action, and the pair is set to take on Tracy Lin and Andrea Remynse of UCLA in second round action at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET) on Wednesday. Third round matches set for later in the day.
In the singles qualifying bracket, Zsilinszka posted two wins on the day to advance to the final qualifying match. Zsilinszka posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Yvette Hyndman of Georgia in the first round and then went on to defeat Carol Salge of Clemson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in second round action. She will square off against Amanda McDowell of Georgia at a time to be determined on Wednesday.
Plotkin, who ranks 102nd in the nation, got past Cristina Visico of California, 6-1, 1-0 ret., in the first round but fell to Yasmin Schnack of UCLA, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, in the second round.
Junior Melissa Mang and Nze each fell in the first round, as 72nd-ranked Mang was defeated by Paula Mesterova of Loyola (Md.), 6-3, 6-2, and Nze lost a hard-fought three-set match to Kirsten Flower of Georgia Tech, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Four doubles teams and eight singles players will advance to the All-American main draw, which will take place on Oct. 4-7.
The duo of Mang and senior Tory Zawacki won the doubles championship at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships in August, earning a wild card spot in the main draw. The Blue Devil pair ranks 22nd in the national preseason listings.
