CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Five Duke singles players and three Blue Devil doubles tandems were successful on Friday at the 2007 ITA Southeast Regional Championships, as Duke is set to continue action on Saturday morning.
Junior Melissa Mang started things out for Duke, posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alexandra Sitnikova of Eastern Kentucky to advance to the round of 32. Mang will face Laura Reichert on Saturday at 9:45 a.m.
Sophomore Amanda Granson defeated Rosalia Alda of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-1, on Friday, and will square off against Estafania Balda of Clemson at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Freshman Reka Zsilinszka will also be in action at 10 a.m., as she is set to face Deanna Bailey of Elon. Zsilinszka posted a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anja Gugger of Appalachian State to advance in regional action.
Sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin also recorded a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Valerie Behr of UNC Greensboro on Friday to make it to the round of 32. Plotkin will face Yevgenia Stupak of East Tennessee State at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Freshman Ellah Nze defeated Kelsey Linville of Davidson in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to advance in regional play, and will go up against Anna Novo of USC Upstate on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Also in singles action were junior Jessi Robinson and senior Tory Zawacki, as Robinson fell to Federica Van Adrichem of Clemson, 6-2, 6-2, and Zawacki was defeated by Samantha Orlin of Tennessee, 6-3, 7-5.
Three Duke doubles teams were in action on Friday, as the trio of tandems each posted wins to advantce to the round of 32. Plotkin and Zsilinszka posted an 8-3 win over Yudeshnee Pillay and Ana Spivakovsky of Charlotte, and are set to face Mijacika and Federica Van Adrichem of Clemson on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Also in action at 8:30 a.m. will be the Blue Devil tandems of Granson and Mang and Nze and Robinson. Granson and Mang teamed up to post an 8-6 victory over Jelena Durisic and Linzee Mabrey of North Carolina on Friday, and advance to meet Laura Gioia and Lauren Osborne of Furman.
Nze and Robinson defeated Jenny Gomez and Laura Kriett of Gardner Webb, 8-3, and move on to face Ina Hadziselimovic and Alexandra Luc of Clemson.
The 2007 ITA Southeast Regional Championships will run from Oct. 17-22, with all matches set to be held at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Play began Wednesday with pre-qualifying and concludes on Monday with the championship matches.
