Charlottesville, Va. ? Junior Kiril Dimitrov kept his ITA National Indoor hopes alive with two singles victories on Friday to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Wilson Mideast Regional Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
Dimitrov played for the first time in the tournament Friday. Dimitrov, ranked No. 57 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, claimed a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory over North Carolina's Andrew Crone. He advanced to the round of 32 where he matched up against Winthrop's Vinicius Bortolatto. It was the second time the two players have met this fall. Dimitrov came out on top in the first meeting at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships 6-4, 6-4 and the second time around he had a 6-4, 5-5 lead in the match before walking over to the next round due to an injury to Bortolatto.
Dimitrov moves on to the round of 16 where he will face No. 100 Albert Larregola of Virginia Tech. Larregola defeated Dimitrov's teammate Alex Stone earlier in the day by a 6-2, 6-1 score.
The only other Duke player to win in singles on Friday was senior David Goulet. He won in three sets against Maryland's David Kwon 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 but did not continue on to the round of 16 due to an injury. Instead No. 56 Benjamin Carlotti of North Carolina advanced. The injury also kept Goulet and Christopher Price from competing in doubles, allowing a duo from North Carolina, Kyle Baker and Will Plyler, to move on.
Dylan Arnould, who is ranked No. 109 in the preseason singles rankings, was in action on Friday after receiving a first round bye. He squared off against North Carolina's Clay Donato in his first match and fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Reid Carleton was ranked No. 114 in the preseason and had a bye to start off the main draw. Carleton then lost to Lisandro Picardo of East Tennessee State 6-4, 6-2.
The only Duke doubles team left in the tournament after Goulet and Price had to withdraw was Carleton and Dimitrov. The pair lost could not advance on to the round of 16 as they fell to Virginia's Michael Shabaz and Sanam Singh, 8-3.
The round of 16 singles contests will be played on Saturday. The two finalists of the ITA Mideast Regional will automatically qualify for the ITA National Indoor Tournament Nov. 1-4.
