CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke began action at the 2007 ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Thursday as junior Jessi Robinson won two matches in qualifying action to advance to the main draw of the competition.
Robinson defeated Adrianne Hodges of Wofford, 6-1, 6-1, before posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jo-Ann VanAerde of Louisville. The Delaware native will be put up against Federica Van Adrichem of Clemson. The two will square off at 3 p.m.
Six Blue Devils will play their first regional matches in the singles main draw on Friday morning. Junior Melissa Mang will take on Alexandra Sitnikova of Eastern Kentucky and sophomore Amanda Granson will square off agaisnst Rosalia Alda of Tennessee at 8:30 a.m.
Freshman Reka Zsilinszka will face Anja Gugger of Appalachian State at 9:30 a.m., while sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin awaits Valerie Behr of UNC Greensboro for an 11:30 a.m. matchup.
At 12:30 p.m., senior Tory Zawacki will take on Samantha Orlin of Tennessee before freshman Ellah Nze goes up against Kelsey Linville of Davidson at 1:30 p.m.
In main draw doubles action, the Duke duos of Plotkin and Zsilinszka, Granson and Mang, and Robinson and Nze all received first-round byes. Plotkin and Zsilinszka will face Charlotte's tandem of Yudeshnee Pillay and Ana Spivakovsky on Friday at 4 p.m.
Granson and Mang will take on Jelena Durisic and Linzee Mabrey (North Carolina) at 5 p.m., while Nze and Robinson are set to go up against Jenny Gomez and Laura Kriett of Gardner Webb at the same time.
The 2007 ITA Southeast Regional Championships will run from Oct. 17-22, with all matches set to be held at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Play begins Wednesday with pre-qualifying and concludes Monday with the championship matches.
