DURHAM, N.C. - Adam Long of the Duke men's golf team has been named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Student-Athlete of the Week by the Duke Radio Network.
Long, a freshman playing in his first collegiate tournament, finished in second place individually at the Fighting Illini Invitational this week and helped lead the Blue Devils to the team championship.
Duke overcame a three-shot deficit during the final round and overtook first and second round leader Stanford to win the title by six strokes. The Blue Devils also charged past top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State on their way to the top of the leaderboard.
Long posted rounds of 70-71-71 for a 212 score, one shot behind the individual champ, Niklas Lemke of Arizona State, who rode a tournament low round of 66 over the final 18 holes. Long had 38 pars and seven birdies during the event, which was held at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois.
Long's teammate, Michael Schachner, finished third overall with three straight 71s.
Duke moved up to No. 13 in the national poll after the win. The Blue Devils return to action Oct. 8-9 at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic.
