ROCKY FACE, GA - Sophomore Clark Klaasen and junior Michael Quagliano each shot even-par 72 on Sunday to lead Duke to a round of three-over (291) on Sunday in the final round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club. The Blue Devils finished the event 13th overall with a score of 11-over (289-295-291=875).
Alabama captured the title with an eight-under 280 on Sunday to finish the event at 23-under overall. Clemson was six shots back with a 17-under 847, while Georgia and Georgia Tech tied for third at -10 (854). Florida and Georgia State tied for fourth at eight-under (856).
With Duke opening up play on the back nine, Klaasen bogeyed No. 10, No.14 and No. 16 to fall to three-over through seven holes. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native rallied to birdie the next three holes and get back to even-par. Following five straight pars, Klaasen added a birdie on No. 7 to move to one-under on the day. A bogey on his final hole dropped him back to even par and left him tied for 27th overall with a three-round score of one-under (70-73-72=215).
Quagliano opened Sunday's play with a birdie on No. 10 followed by five straight pars. After a birdie on the par-4 16th, he bogeyed No. 17 and No. 18 to make the turn at even-par. The Ardsley, N.Y. native carded seven pars, one birdie and one bogey over the final nine holes for his second even-par round of the tournament. Quagliano also fired a 72 in the opening round on Friday . For the tournament, Quagliano finished tied for 48th at four-over (72-76-72=220).
Schachner bogeyed No. 10 but rebounded to post six pars and birdies on No. 13 and No. 16 to make the turn at one-under in the final round. After a par on No. 1, he ran into trouble and played the next seven holes at four-over, including a double-bogey on the par-3 fifth hole. Schachner recovered in time to birdie the par-5 ninth, Duke's closing hole on Sunday, to finish the Carpet Capital Collegiate tied for 30th with an even-par 216 (69-74-74).
Jake Grodzinsky posted three birdies, three pars and three bogeys en route to an even-par 36 on the opening nine. The senior team captain suffered a bogey on No. 2 and a double-bogey on No. 4 to slip to three-over with five holes to play. Grodzinsky responded with birdies on the par-3 fifth and the par-4 seventh hole to get back to one-over on the day. The Cornville, Ariz., native closed the tournament tied for 65th at nine-over (78-74-73=225).
Sophomore Andrew Giuliani fired a four-over 76 (38-38) in the final round to close the event in 81st place with a 13-over 229 (76-75-76).
Georgia's Chris Kirk fired a five-under 67 on Sunday to overcome a four shot deficit and capture the individual title at 11-under. N.C. State's Darren Blair shot an even-par 72 to finish second at 10-under, while Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow and Clemson's Ben Martin finished three shots back at eight-under.
