DURHAM, N.C. ? Led by junior Ali Hausfeld, who recorded her 3,000th career assist, the Duke volleyball team opened the 2006 season with a 3-1 (30-25, 28-30, 30-17, 30-21) victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles on Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Hausfeld became the fifth player in Duke history to record 3,000 career assists and moved into fourth place on the all-time list surpassing Karen Greiner. Her 69 assists on the night give her 3,058 career assists. She also added nine digs, five blocks and four kills in the win.
Senior Tealle Hunkus, junior Carrie DeMange and freshman Rachael Moss all recorded double-doubles in the victory. Hunkus registered 12 kills and 21 digs on the night, while DeMange led the Blue Devils offensively with 23 kills to go along with 13 digs and five blocks. Moss, who earned numerous All-America awards during her prep career, was impressive in her collegiate debut, posting 15 kills and 15 digs for the Blue Devils.
"I thought it was a great way to begin our season playing excellent competition and being able to be successful," stated head coach Jolene Nagel. "Our team has worked very hard since the season ended last year and I think that was evident tonight."
After splitting the first two games, Duke took control of the match with a 30-17 win in game three. Leading 10-8 in the third frame, the Blue Devils scored nine straight points to take an 11-point lead at 19-8. Moss and sophomore Jourdan Norman had two kills apiece in the 9-0 run.
In game four, Duke would use an 11-6 run midway through the frame to take a 22-15 lead. The Blue Devils then ended the match on an 8-6 run, highlighted by two service aces and two kills from DeMange.
"We were very excited to get out on the court and play together," Nagel added. "I feel like we controlled the tempo of the match for the most part. I could see the maturity of our upperclassmen throughout the match with the way we handled their attempts to take the momentum away from us."
Junior Jenny Shull paced the Duke defense with a team-high 23 digs. Norman added seven blocks defensively to go along with 10 kills.
Senior Jamie Mueller recorded 11 kills and 25 digs to lead the Golden Eagles. Junior Kimberley Todd also recorded a double-double, posting 16 kills and 15 digs. Junior Monica Renfrow and senior Katie Weidner paced the attack with 26 and 18 assists, respectively.
The Blue Devils will host day two of the 2006 Duke Invitational tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. Duke faces Gardner-Webb in Saturday's opening match. Marquette and VCU will square off at 12 p.m. followed by Gardner-Webb and Marquette at 5 p.m. Duke and VCU will wrap up the annual tournament at 7 p.m.
