DURHAM, N.C. - National Player of the Year candidate Michael Videira scored two goals and added an assist as the 12th-ranked Blue Devils kicked off the 2006 season with a 5-2 victory over Hartford at Koskinen Stadium on Friday.
Videira, a junior preseason All-America, gave Duke a 2-0 lead in the first half when he fired a shot from just inside the box that hit off the right post and ricocheted in for the goal. After Hartford got on the board with a goal by Kevin O'Donnell Shaw in the 52nd minute, Videira headed a ball off the crossbar, collected his own rebound and blasted the ball off the left post and in for his second of the game. Just 31 seconds later, Videira passed the ball to Zach Pope on the baseline and Pope sent a cross into the middle of the box where Mike Grella punched it in on a diving header to give the Blue Devils a 4-1 lead at the 62:58 mark.
"We had a great game and really worked together as a team," said Videira. "We knew what we needed to do and thought it was going to be difficult at first because of the heat. I thought we had a lot of movement which created space and opened some things up for us."
Hartford would cut the lead back down to two goals in the 75th minute when Jiwon Shu took a pass from Oswald Adu and sent it 35 yards for his first goal of the season. However, the Blue Devils wouldn't waste any time putting the game out of reach as Spencer Wadsworth passed the ball to the outside of the box and Brad Ramsey, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, N.C., made a defender miss before bending the shot just inside the left post for his first collegiate goal.
"It was a very good opening game," said Head Coach John Rennie. "We scored some great goals on things we have been working on. We had a very strong attacking day."
Duke's first goal came from Joe Germanese, a junior transfer from Vanderbilt. Wadsworth passed the ball to Pope in the corner and Pope crossed the ball to the opposite side of the box where Joe Germanese was gliding towards the goal. Germanese converted for his first goal as a Blue Devil. Wadsworth and Pope each finished the game with two assists.
"Joe adds a lot of energy and is a great athlete," said Rennie. "He runs off the ball extremely well. He reads the game well and works very hard. He works off the ball well so he doesn't have to have the ball at his feet to create things."
The Blue Devils had a significant advantage, holding a 22-6 advantage in total shots and 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Justin Papadakis made three saves for Duke while Matt Glaeser stopped four shots for the Hawks.
Duke will play at home again on Sunday. They will host a 7:30 p.m. contest with St. Francis College following the women's soccer match against Western Carolina at 5 p.m.
