Durham, N.C. - The NCAA announced the selections for the 2006 Women's Lacrosse tournament Monday night, with Duke earning the No. 1 seed after posting a 16-2 record on the season. The Blue Devils will host its first round contest on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Holy Cross (14-6).
The Blue Devils will make their ninth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. They opened the season with a school-record nine game winning streak that also matched a record for the most consecutive wins at home with nine dating back to the 2005 season. The first loss of the season came on April 1 against No. 4 Virginia, 11-10. Duke answered by defeating the defending national champions and then No. 1 Northwestern, 16-10, to snap their 31-game winning streak. The victory was the program's second all-time over a No. 1 team and started a streak of five straight wins heading into the ACC Tournament.
Duke earned a top seed and a bye in the first round before cruising to a 19-9 win over No. 5 Maryland to advance to the ACC Championship for the fourth time and third straight year. No. 4 Virginia broke a 4-4 tie, scoring with just 10 seconds left on the clock in the first half. They carried the momentum into the second period and scored six straight goals to open up an 11-4 lead. Duke ended up losing 13-8 but bounced back to defeat No. 8 Dartmouth, 6-4, in the regular season finale and tie a school record with their 10th win over a ranked opponent this season.
This season the Blue Devils have been led by Katie Chrest, who earned ACC Player of the Year for the second straight season. She has a team-high 56 goals to go along with 14 assists for 70 points. She was an All-ACC selection for the second time, made the ACC All-Tournament team and is a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. Kristen Waagbo and Rachel Sanford are also Tewaaraton nominees. Waagbo was named All-ACC for the first time and was chosen on the ACC All-Tournament team. She leads the team with 29 assists, one shy of the school record for assists in a season, and has 41 goals for 70 points. Sanford was named All-ACC for the second straight season and was named to the ACC All-Tournament team. She leads the team with 48 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers to go along with 30 goals, 13 assists and 43 points. Leigh Jester and Michelle Menser were also named to the All-ACC team this season. Senior goalie Megan Huether has anchored the defense this season with a save percentage over 50-percent for the fourth straight year and leads the ACC with a 7.57 goals against average.
The Blue Devils are coming off their second Final Four appearance. They defeated Richmond and North Carolina to advance to their first Final Four since 1999. They eventually lost to Virginia, 15-13, in the semifinal game. The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 6-8 in the NCAA Tournament, winning five of their eight first round games.
