Durham, N.C. - The IWLCA released its list of All-Region teams on Thursday with four Blue Devils making the All-South region first team and one other named to the second team. The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with each athlete becoming eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced on May 30. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 10, 2006, in Baltimore, Md.
The Blue Devils led all schools with four players on the All-South region first team. Katie Chrest and Rachel Sanford each earned a spot on the first team for the second straight year while Laura Anderson and Leigh Jester were named to the first team for the first time in their careers. Kristen Waagbo was the fifth Duke player selected, earning a spot on the second team.
Chrest, a senior from Hampstead, Md., has now been named all-region in all four of her seasons at Duke. She received her second straight first team honor after being named to the second team as a freshman and sophomore. This season she leads the team with 61 goals, 80 points and 42 draw controls. She is also second on the team with 19 assists to go along with 39 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers. She is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy and repeated as ACC Player of the Year. She was also named to the All-ACC squad and ACC All-Tournament team.
Sanford, a junior from Greenwich, Conn., has now earned first team recognition in each of her first two seasons after redshirting her freshman year. This season she has tallied 35 goals and 15 assists for 50 points. She has four game winning goals and leads Duke with 52 ground balls and 45 caused turnovers. She is also second on the squad with 41 draw controls. She was named to the All-ACC team and the ACC All-Tournament team.
Anderson, a senior from Severna Park, Md., earned her first selection to the all-region team. She has started all 20 games this season. She is second on the team with 41 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers. A captain this season, Anderson has helped lead the Duke defense which ranks third in the nation in goal allowed at just 7.50 goals per game allowed.
Jester, a junior from Ridgewood, N.J., also made her first appearance on the all-region team. She has enjoyed a career season with 39 goals and 13 assists for 52 points. She has started all 20 games and was named to the All-ACC squad. She earned National Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of wins over top-10 teams. She had two goals and four assists in a 16-10 over No. 1 Northwestern and two days later she had a team-high three goals in an 11-10 win over No. 10 Notre Dame.
Waagbo, a junior from Ellicott City, Md., made the All-South region second team. She earned her first career regional honor after setting a school record with 32 assists this season. She is second on the team with 45 goals and 77 points. She has scored a team-high five game-winning goals this year. She is a two-time National Player of the Week, was named to the All-ACC team and made the ACC All-Tournament team.
The Blue Devils will square off against Northwestern, the defending national champions, at 6 p.m. on Friday at Nickerson Field in Boston, Mass. Duke is the only team to hand the Wildcats a loss this season as they snapped a 31-game winning streak with a 16-10 victory on April 7. The other semifinal game will feature Notre Dame and Dartmouth at 8:30 p.m.
