Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Sea Best Intercollegiate on January 26, 2026

5/23/2006 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
COLUMBUS, OHIO- For the second straight year, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the NCAA Championship in tied for fifth place as the Blue Devils carded a nine-over-par ledger of 297 and is six shots behind Southern California, who turned in a 291 on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio. Duke was led by freshman Jennie Lee and sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi who posted one-over-par rounds of 73 on day one.
The Blue Devils closed the first round of the 2005 NCAA Championship five shots off the lead and were nine shots back after the second day before making their charge to lead after 54-holes at the Meadows Course in Sunriver, Ore. last year. Duke went on to claim its third NCAA Championship with a 72-hole total of 1,170.
On Tuesday, Southern California took the team lead with a 291 with Arizona State (292) , Florida (293), Arizona (296), Wake Forest (297), Duke (297), Louisiana State (298), Arkansas (299), Purdue (301), UCLA (301), Auburn (301) and Pepperdine rounding out the top-nine at the 6,203-yard, Par 72 Ohio State Golf Club - Scarlet Course. The Blue Devils were right around the lead going into the final three holes today before going six-over-par to head to the clubhouse.
"I feel just fine," said Brooks. "I have a team that learns well and today we found out that the greens are hard, jumping. We found some places that you cannot feel the wind that is there and we will pay better attention to those things tomorrow. We slipped into a couple of bunkers and roughs that we didn't need to get into. We played a lot of good golf today, but it got away from us a little at the end. I am not sure what happened exactly or what caused that. I am discouraged at all. We are in good shape."
Lee, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., kicked off her first NCAA Championship with birdies on the first two holes and held a one-under-par total through the 16th hole, but suffered bogies on No. 17 and No. 18 to close out her day with a 73. Of the four par three holes she played on Tuesday, Lee had bogies on three of them.
Continuing her excellent play, Pandolfi finished day one with a 73 to go along with three birdies. A product of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi headed to the 16th hole standing at one-under-par, but came up short on her second shot into the green and went on to double-bogey the hole. The two-time All-ACC selection came back to chip in for a 35-foot birdie on the 175-yard, par three 17th hole to go back to even par, but a bogey on No. 18 sent her back to over-over-par. Both Lee and Pandolfi enter the second day of action at tied for 10th.
"I felt like I played really solid," said Pandolfi. "I had a bad hole on 16 as I just made a stupid mistake. We will go into tomorrow just like we went into today. I am for sure that we haven't seen the best golf for Liz and Amanda. There is a lot of time left."
The reigning NCAA Individual Champion, Anna Grzebien, opened her title defense with a solid round of 75 and is tied for 33rd. Grzebien, who is from Narragansett, R.I., came out of the gates with a bogey on the first hole but got it back on the second to remain even par. Due to an unlucky break on the sixth hole as her second shot into the 527-yard, par five went under a tree approaching the green, she ended up with a double-bogey. Grzebien came back with birdies on the seventh and ninth holes to make the turn at even par. On the back nine, she closed out with a 39 with three bogies.
Freshman Amanda Blumenherst came out on Tuesday and had her second-worst round of the year with a 76 and is tied for 46th. The only other time the Scottsdale, Ariz., native shot a score higher was in the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate when she posted a 78 on day one and responded by firing rounds of 68, 70 to finish second at even par, 216. Blumenherst opened the tournament with a bogey on the 379-yard, par four first hole and also had a bogey No. 5 before notching her only birdie of the day on the 349-yard, par four seventh hole. After suffering a bogey on No. 9, she made the turn at 38 and then went on to total bogeys on the 10th and 13 holes. She notched five straight pars to close out the day.
"I definitely could have played better," said Blumenherst. "My driver really didn't go as straight as I would have liked and this is a pretty tight course with thick rough. You want to hit it straight off the tee and I just didn't. Also, the putts just didn't fall and if they go in [tomorrow] it will be a lot lower."
Playing in her final collegiate tournament, senior Liz Janangelo came out and bogied her first two holes before registering the first of three birdies on par fives on Tuesday. Janangelo, from West Hartford, Conn., made the turn at two-over-par, 38, but had a very eventful final nine with a 39 to finish with a 77. On the back nine, Janangelo totaled one double-bogey, two birdies, three bogeys and three pars and is tied for 70th.
Leading the individual action is Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas who came out and shot four-under-par, 68, notching four birdies and no bogeys on Tuesday. Tiffany Chudy of Florida is second with a 69 followed by Jennifer Osborn of Arizona State at third, 70, and Tiffany Joh (UCLA), Catalina Marin (Southern California) and Sommer Scholl (Arizona) tied for fourth with a 71.
Duke will tee off on Wednesday beginning on the 10th hole at 8:50 a.m. along with Louisiana State and UCLA.

Other Duke Quotes
Head Coach Dan Brooks
"Things can change so fast. Six shots is nothing one way or another. You have to keep playing hard."
On the play of Pandolfi and Lee:
"It just tells you that we are a strong team from top to bottom. Jennifer has been coming on and in this tournament playing five and now she is at the top of the pack for us. We have a lot of talent on this team."
Freshman Amanda Blumenherst
On the course:
"It you get it in the rough around the greens you are going to have a hard time getting it up and down. That is what I found out today."
