Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Sea Best Intercollegiate on January 26, 2026

5/24/2006 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
COLUMBUS, OHIO- After carding a team-best round of 292 on Wednesday under favorable weather conditions, the Duke women's golf team moved up three spots to second with 36-holes remaining at the 2006 NCAA Championship, which is being held at the 6,203-yard, par 72 Ohio State Golf Club - Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Taking over the top slot at the championship was Arizona State, who turned in a round of 294 on the second day and sits with a 36-hole total of 586, which is 10-over-par. Top-ranked Duke owns a ledger of 589 and is only three shots out of first place with two days remaining. Rounding out the top-10 is day one leader Southern California (591), Tennessee (593), Purdue (596), Pepperdine (596), Auburn (599), Florida (600), Louisiana State (605) and California (606).
"It was not like we didn't show up yesterday," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "I think we had a learning day yesterday and we learned something today too. We learned a lot yesterday. There are some greens that are getting a little bit firmer and are starting to behave a little bit more like you expect greens to behave with a new course being built. They were still soft from the rain you guys have had up here. They are finally getting firmer but we are a little bit more on top of that."
Duke began the day on the 10th tee box and the first two Blue Devils -- Liz Janangelo and Amanda Blumenherst -- heated up early. Janangelo, a product of West Hartford, Conn., was coming off a five-over-par total of 77 on day one, but came out and had three straight pars before birding No. 13 and No. 14 to go to two-under-par. She would go on to bogey the next hole before sinking a 30-foot putt to go back to two-under-par on the 323-yard, par four 16th hole. The lone senior on the roster made the turn at one-under-par after suffering a bogey on No. 18 and went on to play her final nine holes at even par. She concluded the day with a 71 and is tied for 15th in the individual competition with a ledger of 148.
"It [opening with two early birdies] helped out a lot, especially after yesterday," said Janangelo. "The team and I last night went over our targets. I just decided that I needed to reevaluate some of my decisions. Be more conservative in some places and less conservative in others and really go for it. With their help it really made a difference in choosing club selection. I really just drove it in the fairway more. I only hit one fairway yesterday so it was nice to have approach shots and have a nice chance of hitting the green instead of kind of making up a shot. That was a nice change."
After shooting the second worst round of her collegiate career on Tuesday, Blumenherst birdied the first two par fives -- No. 12 and No. 14 -- and was two-under-par through six holes before posting bogies on the No. 16 and No. 17. She would make the turn at even par and remained that way until the final three holes. Currently the top-ranked golfer in the nation, Blumenherst suffered bogies on the seventh and ninth holes to finish with a 74. The native of Scottsdale, Ariz. is tied for 29th with a 150.
Playing the best golf after two days of action for the Blue Devils has been freshman Jennie Lee, who is tied for fifth overall after collecting rounds of 73, 72 for a 145, which is one-over-par. Her even-par 72 on Wednesday marked only the second even or under par ledger over her last five tournaments. Lee, who is from Huntington Beach, Fla., had a very solid day on the course making the turn at even with one birdie on No. 16 and a bogey on No. 18, while closing with seven pars, a bogey on No. 3 and a birdie on No. 4. A day after turning in bogeys on three of the four par threes, Lee played all four of them at even par on Wednesday.
"I hit the ball pretty well today," said Lee. "I struggled with my iron shots kind of the whole year, but I went home before the tournament and got some lessons. I hit some really good bunker shots today and made some saves so that helped make some pars. Overall, I had a good round today. It is a really hard course out there, especially when you don't hit the greens. The greens are pretty sloppy out there to. I think overall I just did everything pretty well."
Posting her second straight round of 75 on day two was junior Anna Grzebien, who sits tied for 29th with a 150. The reigning NCAA Individual Champion and product of Narragansett, R.I., opened her first hole with a perfect shot out of the rough which ended up five feet from the cup and went on to make a birdie. Grzebien had bogies on the next two holes but came back with a par on No. 13 and birdied the 466-yard, par five 14th hole to move back to even par. She concluded the first nine with bogies on the 16th and 18th holes to make the turn at two-over-par. On the back nine, Grzebien registered eight pars and had one bogey on the 153-yard, par three fifth hole to finish with at three-over-par, 75.
After carding a one-over-par yesterday and being ranked tied for 10th, sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi responded with a 77 on the second day and is tied for 29th with a 36-hole ledger of 150. The 5-10 product of Navarre, Fla., had five bogies and 13 pars on the day.
Continuing to lead the individual action is Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas, who owns a five-under-par, 139. On Wednesday, Vargas totaled a 71 after shooting four-under-par on the first day of play. Arizona State's Jennifer Osborn is second (143), while Florida's Tiffany Chudy and Tennessee's Violeta Retamoza are tied for third (144).
"We are talking about being smart here [on the Scarlet Course]," said Brooks. "I think that is what [Jack] Nicklaus demands on his course. There are places to be on this course where if you play just percentage golf in terms of where you want to leave the ball and that kind of thing. You just have to think."
Duke will tee off on Thursday in the final grouping, which begins at 1:20 p.m. along with Southern California and Arizona State.
Duke Notes:

Other Duke Quotes
Head Coach Dan Brooks
On the wind:
"It [yesterday's round] was about like this. It wasn't real windy, but there was definitely a wind-- anywhere from a half club to a club wind. It seems like it was pretty consistent today as opposed to yesterday. It seemed like it was changing direction a lot. That made it easier. On the par threes, it seemed like we were between clubs and today we were more able to pull out a particular club and that helps a lot to."
"I have some smart players on the team and they had some nice discussions I thought at dinner and riding over on the van. I think they brought up some things about the golf course to each other. That is another nice thing about having a united team that we have. They want to share information and help each other. They are very willing to get ideas out there that might help their team. That sharing helped out a lot and made us smarter today."
"We showed up on Saturday. This team has been here and we have been paying attention to this golf course and learning as we go. I think to shoot nine-over-par on that first day on this golf course-- that wasn't bad. We had a nice discussion afterwards and I have noticed that this team picks up a lot when they play a round of golf. They learn as they go. We are a team that can go for it but I think they have been playing relative conservative golf and I think that is how we want to get into this thing to begin with. You have some deep rough, deep bunkers and a golf course that you don't know that has been redesigned by a good designer. I think we have attacked about as much as you want to attack and we have played smart like we should."
On bad weather possibility:
"Yea, and we are kind of ready for that. Down at Auburn a couple years ago we had that delay and I will probably mention that a little bit. Anything can happen and you have to be ready. You are going off late and you then you might even be delayed on top of that. If you are sort of aware that it could happen I think you will be able to handle it."
Senior Liz Janangelo
On the 30-foot putt for birdie on the 16th:
"Well, it is always good to make a long one. I was just excited to see it roll in. I was just trying to lag it up there close. It really gave me a lot of momentum, especially coming off a bogey on the hole before.'
Freshman Jennie Lee
On having two good rounds, has that increased your confidence:
"I struggled a lot this past year with adjusting to college. I struggled with golf but I think especially having these two good rounds in a row it helps give me a lot of confidence going into the next two days."
