Durham, N.C. - No. 3 Duke (17-2) will host the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. when No. 13 James Madison (15-4) comes to Durham. The top-seeded Blue Devils advanced with an 18-2 victory over Holy Cross in the first round whilel the eighth-seeded Dukes held on for a 9-8 win over Richmond.
Duke in the NCAA Tournament: The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 7-8 in the NCAA Tournament with two trips to the Final Four. They are appearing in their ninth straight tournament and have won their first round game in six of the nine appearances. They are 1-4 all-time in the second game. They advanced to the Final Four in 1999 and 2005 before losing to Virginia both years. Duke holds an all-time record of 7-3 at home in the postseason.
Last Time Out: Duke kept its cool through two weather delays in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and cruised to an 18-2 victory over Holy Cross to advance. The Blue Devils jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before the first delay. They came out and scored 15 seconds after the delay and six straight before the Crusaders scored their first goal to make it 11-1. The second delay came five minutes later after Duke's 12th goal. After the long break, the Blue Devils wrapped up the first half with two goals and went on a 4-0 run to go up 16-1 with 22 minutes left. Katie Chrest led the charge with three goals and four assists in the first half. Kristen Waagbo finished with four goals and two assists while Leigh Jester added four goals and eight ground balls.
Last Year's Tournament: Last season the Blue Devils hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament after receiving the No. 2 seed. They cruised to a 16-4 win in the first round against Richmond and earned a 15-7 win over North Carolina to advance to the second Final Four in school history. In the semifinal contest, Virginia scored nine goals in the first half to take a two-goal lead at halftime and went on to win by the same amount, 15-13. Katie Chrest finished led Duke with 10 goals and six assists in the three games. Kristen Waagbo scored eight goals to go with five assists and Leigh Jester had nine goals and an assist. Megan Huether stopped 24 shots in the three contests.
Series History: Duke and James Madison have met five times with the Blue Devils holding a 4-1 advantage in the series. Duke has won three straight games with the last coming in a 13-5 game in 2003. The Blue Devils defeated James Madison 11-10 in 1999 to advance to the school's first ever Final Four.
James Madison: The Dukes are 15-4 on the season and enter Saturday's game riding a seven game winning streak. They have a 5-4 record against ranked squads, including a 7-6 overtime victory over No. 3 Georgetown. After starting the season 5-3, James Madison has won 10 of their last 11 games. They are led by Kelly Berger who has 57 goals and 34 assists for 91 points. Brooke McKenzie is second with 44 goals and 16 assists while Lynlea Cronin has 43 goals and eight assists. Livvy King has started all 19 games in goal and has a 9.66 goals against average and .459 save percentage.
Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament: This year's senior class is 3-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with the three wins coming over the past two years. They advanced to the Final Four last season before falling to Virginia. Katie Chrest has scored 13 goals to go along with 10 assists in six NCAA Tournament games while Megan Huether has made 49 saves over the past three seasons. Leigh Jester has recorded at least three goals in all five of her NCAA Tournament games and Kristen Waagbo has notched 12 goals and nine assists in the five games over the past three years. Last season Jester and Waagbo were each named to the NCAA All-Tournament team.
Season Assist Record: Kristen Waagbo recorded two assists against Holy Cross in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to give her 31 on the year, passing Tricia Martin for the school record. Martin tallied 30 assists to help lead Duke to the Final Four in 1999. Waagbo is only four assists away from matching Martin for the career assists record at 75.
Tewaaraton Finalist: Katie Chrest has been named as a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy for the second straight year and will try to become the first player to win the award twice after winning it last season. She joins four other finalists, including Northwestern's Kristen Kjellman, Notre Dame's Crysti Foote, Virginia's Nikki Lieb and Georgetown's Coco Stanwick. Kristen Waagbo and Rachel Sanford were each semifinalists for the award with Sanford a preseason candidate and Waagbo a midseason addition. Megan Huether was also one of three Duke players on the preseason watch list.
Treasure Chrest: Katie Chrest passed Tricia Martin for the career goals record at Duke with a goal against No. 5 Maryland on Feb. 25. She scored her 200th career goal in the ACC Semifinals against Maryland to become the fifth player in ACC history with 200 goals in a career. She now sits at 211 goals and is six shy of Virginia's Lauren Aumiller for fourth place on the ACC list.
Streaky Scorer: Katie Chrest has scored a goal in all 19 games this season for Duke to extend her streak to 52 straight games with at least one goal. The last game she was held scoreless was in a 12-5 loss to No. 1 Princeton on March 17, 2004. She has recorded at least one goal in 73 of her 77 career contests. She scored in every game last season and has recorded multiple goals in 61 games in her career.
Helping Hand: Kristen Waagbo and Katie Chrest both rank among the top five in Duke history in career assists. Waagbo moved into second on the all-time list with four assists against Boston College to pass Kate Soulier. Waagbo now has 71 assists after adding two against Holy Cross in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Chrest is one assist behind Waagbo after posting four assists in Duke's 18-2 win over Holy Cross. She now has 70 in her career. Waagbo is four away from Tricia Martin's record and has a school record 31 assists this season. Chrest has recorded 18 assists to rank ninth in the ACC this season.
First Half Success: In 19 games this year, Duke has outscored its opponent 172-82 in the first half. They took a 15-0 lead into the break against Saint Joseph's and scored 14 goals against Duquesne, Virginia Tech and Holy Cross. They have entered haltime with a lead of five goals or more in 10 games and have only trailed twice this season at the break. There have only been four games in which they led by fewer than three goals as they led 7-6 at No. 6 Princeton, 9-7 against Vanderbilt, 6-4 against No. 4 Virginia on April 30 and 3-2 against No. 8 Dartmouth.
Duke vs. Ranked Teams: The Blue Devils are 10-2 against ranked teams this year, matching a school record for wins over ranked team in a season. The 2001 team was the first to defeat 10 ranked teams. The Blue Devils have earned wins over eight teams ranked in the top-10, four of which were top-five squads. The Blue Devils own a 58-35 record against ranked foes since the beginning of the 2000 season. They will square off against No. 13 James Madison in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Duke at Home: The Blue Devils had a school record nine-game home winning streak end on April 1 against Virginia. Duke has an all-time record of 69-28 (.711) at home. After the inaugural season of Duke women's lacrosse in 1996, the Blue Devils have won 77.3-percent of their games with 68 wins and 20 losses. Last year they won a school record nine games, and in 1999 they posted an undefeated record at home with an 8-0 mark. Since the beginning of the 2000 season they are 26-15 (.634) against ranked opponents in Durham.
Milestone Watch: Kristen Waagbo needs four assists to tie Tricia Martin for the school record with 75 career assists. Katie Chrest is is one assist behind Waagbo with 70 in her career. Chrest is also six goals shy of Virginia's Lauren Aumiller for fourth on the all-time ACC goals list. Leigh Jester is three goals away from her 100th career goal. Rachel Sanford needs four points to reach 100 in her career. Duke is two goals shy of tying a school record for goals in a season, four assists off the season record and six points from the season record.They are also one win away from setting school records for wins in a season and wins over a ranked opponent in a season.
