
Duke Advances to NCAA Second Round With 4-0 Victory Over Winthrop on Saturday

Durham, N.C. - Fourth-seeded Duke earned a 4-0 sweep over Winthrop in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Ambler Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
After earning the doubles point, the Blue Devils cruised through singles competition with first-set wins in all six matches. Stephen Amritraj was the first to finish at the No. 6 spot with a win over Thiago Barbosa. He swept the first set, 6-0, and went on to win 6-3 in the second to put Duke ahead 2-0. Amritraj improved to 7-4 in dual matches this season. Peter Rodrigues made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Alejandro Portugal in the No. 3 match. The win gave Rodrigues 80 for his career. He has posted a dual match record of 22-4 this season and is 28-10 overall. Joey Atas won a close first set, 7-5, and then jumped out to a 5-0 lead before clinching the match with a 6-1 victory over Arthur Takahashi. Atas earned his 17th victory of the season and is 14-7 in dual match play. Kiril Dimitrov was one point away from finishing the No. 5 match against Jorge Padilla 6-2, 5-4. Ludovic Walter and Jonathan Stokke also won their first sets at the top two positions but did not finish.
The two teams stayed close throughout the early portion of the doubles matches. Midway through Duke led 5-4 on courts one and two but trailed 4-5 on the third court. Amritraj and Rodrigues went on to win three straight points for an 8-4 victory over Jorge Padilla and Alejandro Portugal at the No. 2 spot. Amritraj and Rodrigues improved to 16-6 at the No. 2 spot this season. No. 17 Atas and Stokke took a 7-6 lead on court one before closing out the victory, 8-6, against Germano Knorr and Rodrigo Santos to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Devils. The win gives Atas and Stokke 25 for the year as they are 14-7 in dual matches and 25-10 overall. The No. 3 match between Duke's Ned Samuelson and Walter and Winthrop's Vinicius Bortolatto and Arthur Takahashi was tied at 6-6 when the point was clinched.
Duke will advance to the second round for the 15th straight season under Head Coach Jay Lapidus. They are 10-4 all-time in second round contests with wins in 10 of their last 11 trips. Last season the Blue Devils defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1, to advance to the round of 16. This year Duke will square off against No. 26 Boise State. The two will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Broncos earned a close 4-3 victory over N.C. State in the first round. They won the doubles point and the first two singles matches for a 3-0 lead but the Wolfpack stormed back to make it 3-3. Boise State pulled out the win at No. 6 in three sets to advance on in the tournament.
