Durham, N.C. - No. 1 Duke earned the top seed for the ACC Women's Lacrosse tournament Thursday-Sunday at the M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. The three-way tie between the Blue Devils, Virginia and North Carolina for first place went to a third tiebreaker that decided the seedings based on goal differential.
Duke had a goal differential of +1 after defeating North Carolina by two and losing by just one goal to Virginia. The Cavaliers receive the second seed with an even goal differential and the Tar Heels will be the third seed with a difference of -1. The top two seeds will each receive byes in the quarterfinal round. The games scheduled for the first day will feature North Carolina against sixth-seeded Virginia Tech at 2:30 p.m. and fourth-seeded Maryland taking on fifth-seeded Boston College at 5 p.m.
The Blue Devils are the defending ACC champions after defeating Virginia, 9-6, last season to capture their first ACC Tournament Championship. The Blue Devils enter this year's conference tournament with a 14-1 record on the season and 4-1 mark in ACC play. They began the season with a school-record nine straight wins before suffering their only loss of the year to Virginia, 11-10. Since the loss they have won five straight contests, including a 16-10 victory over No. 1 Northwestern that snapped the defending national champions' 31-game winning streak. Since their only loss of the year, the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 89-35.
Katie Chrest has led the Blue Devils this season with an ACC-high 3.07 goals per game. She has tallied 46 goals to go along with 12 assists and also leads the squad with 31 draw controls. Chrest along with Kristen Waagbo and Rachel Sanford are all Tewaaraton Trophy nominees this season. Waagbo leads Duke with 25 assists and 63 points. She is second on the team with 38 goals and four game-winning goals. Sanford has tallied 28 goals and 13 assists for 41 points. She also leads the Blue Devils with 38 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers.
Duke will play the winner of the Thursday's quarterfinal game between Maryland and Boston College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The other semifinal game will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday and the finals will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The championship game will be televised regionally on Fox Sports Net South, SunSports, Comcast SportsNet and New England Sports Network.
