Senior Ryan Blaum carded four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey en route to a three-under 69 in the final round of the 2006 ACC Championship at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point on Sunday. As a team, the Blue Devils closed with a two-under 286 to finish eighth overall with a three-round total of 866 (+2).
Blaum closed the tournament tied for sixth with a three-day total of 70-71-69=210 (-6). Also at six-under for the tournament were North Carolina's Chase MacFarland and N.C. State's Nathan Spoon. Cameron Tringale (Georgia Tech) won the individual title with a 10-under 206, topping Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers by one stroke. Clemson's Brian Duncan and North Carolina's Robert Reisen were tied for third at eight-under, while Ted Smith (North Carolina) finished fifth at seven-under. Blaum, Reisen and North Carolina's Jonathan Jackson were the only three players to shoot under par in all three rounds of play.
Georgia Tech and North Carolina were named co-champions of the 53rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship in a dramatic two-hole playoff that ended in a tie. Both teams counted two pars, one birdie and one bogey on the 18th hole. Still tied, they headed to the 17th hole where both teams counted four pars. Darkness impeded any further play.
Clemson placed third at 24-under par with a total score of 840. N.C. State was fourth at ll-under (853), Wake Forest was fifth at four-under (860), Florida State was sixth at one-under (863). Rounding out the field was Maryland at seventh (865), Duke at eighth (866), Virginia Tech at ninth (872), Virginia at 10th (878), and Boston College at 11th (921).
Junior Jake Grodzinsky had his best round of the tournament on Sunday with a two-under 70. The Cornville, Ariz., native finished the tournament tied for 28th at +1 (217). Sophomore Michael Schachner shot 36-37=73 (+1) in the third round to finish in 34th place with a 54-hole score of 219.
Clark Klaasen got off to a terrible start in the final round with a double-bogey on No. 1 and a bogey on No. 3. The freshman then played the remaining 15 holes at one-under to close the day with a +2, 74. Klaasen wrapped up his first ACC Tournament tied for 35th with a 220 (+4). Sophomore Bryce Mueller shot a six-over 78 on Sunday and placed 51st overall with a three-round score of 232 (+16).
