BROWNS SUMMITT, N.C.- The streak will conclude at five as the top-ranked Duke women's golf team finished second at the 2006 Bryan National Collegiate on Sunday as the Blue Devils turned in a 54-hole total of 880 at the 6,210 Yard, Par 72 Bryan Park Champions course in Browns Summitt, N.C.
Taking home the team champion honors was Georgia with a three-day total of 875. Rounding out the top-10 was Duke (880), Purdue (299), Tennessee (890), Wake Forest (899), Florida (900), South Carolina (905), Oklahoma State (906), California (909) and Vanderbilt (913). Duke had won the Bryan National Collegiate the five previous years.
“This [playing with only four golfers] was a great experience for us this weekend,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “I am very happy that we shot under par the last day. We made a couple of judgment calls that cost us and some of our mistakes were pretty simple.”
The Blue Devils were playing shorthanded this weekend as defending NCAA Champion Anna Grzebien was competing in the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Grzebien went on to miss the cut with rounds of 80, 76.
Freshman Amanda Blumenherst shook off career-worst round of 78 on day one with back-to-back under-par ledgers over the weekend. Blumenherst, a product of Scottsdale, Ariz., carded a 68 on Saturday and finished off play on Sunday with a 70 to finish with a 216, which was second. Earning individual medalist accolades was Georgia's Taylor Leon with a 54-hole total of 213. Blumenherst totaled two birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-five sixth hole.
Sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi came up big for the Blue Devils with a career-best final round score of 68 to finish with a 221, which was tied for 13th. A native of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi carded three birdies, only one bogey and an eagle on the par-five 11th hole.
“I couldn't be more excited for Jennifer,” said Brooks. “She continues to demonstrate her best skills when it is most important for us. She stepped up today for us and played big.”
After leading the individual action after day one with a five-under-par 67, senior Liz Janangelo struggled over the last two days with rounds of 77. She finished with a total of 221, which was tied for ninth. Janangelo totaled seven birdies on Friday, but could manage only two birdies over her final 36 holes of play.
Freshman Jennie Lee carded a team-best five birdies in the final round, but also had five bogies to finish with an even-par, 72, on Sunday. Lee earned her sixth top-20 finish of the season with a total of 222, which was tied for 13th.
Duke will next play in the ACC Championship from April 14-16 in Pinehurst, N.C. The championship will be played on Pinehurst Country Club No. 8. The Blue Devils will then return to Bryan Park for the East Regional from May 11-13.
“It was good to play on this golf course because we will be returning for the regionals in May,” said Brooks. “We learned a lot and especially when the wind is blowing you have to make good decisions.”
