PINEHURST, N.C. ? Looking for its 11th consecutive ACC Championship, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team opened play on Friday at the Par 72, 6,293-Yard Pinehurst #8 Golf Course with a six-over-par score of 294 and leads by eight strokes with 36-holes remaining in Pinehurst, N.C.
The Blue Devils were the only team to shoot under 300 on the day and rounding out the field was N.C. State (302), Florida State (302), Virginia (308), Maryland (308), Wake Forest (314), North Carolina (315), Miami (316) and Boston College (330).
"The golf course is not easy and the wind came up on the back side," says Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "I think we played a little better golf on the back side. In the past, we've had some success in this tournament. We are trying to play really well here to give us momentum going into regionals and nationals (NCAA). We did okay today, but we can do better. There is definitely a learning curve on this golf course."
Duke freshman Amanda Blumenherst continued her stellar play with a three-under-par round of 69 and leads the individual action by three strokes. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst opened play with two birdies over her first three holes, but suffered a double-bogey on the par three fifth hole after missing the green on her tee shot. She went on to register five birdies over her final 10 holes, including playing the final seven holes at four-under-par. Five of Blumenherst's six birdies came on par four holes.
Fellow freshman Jennie Lee kicked off her first ACC Championship with a two-over-par 74 on Friday and is tied for fourth. Lee, a product of Huntington Beach, Calif., suffered bogies on each of the first two par five's on the day, but rebounded to notch a birdie on the par-three eighth hole and went on to birdie the par-four 16th hole to even her score. A double-bogey on the 18th hole concluded her action on Friday.
Coming off one of the best tournament of the season at the Bryan Park Collegiate Championship, sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi continued her excellent play with a three-over-par, 75. Pandolfi, who is from Navarre, Fla., is tied for seventh as she finished the day with a solid round of zero birdies and three bogies.
Just like Blumenherst, Duke senior Liz Janangelo missed the green on the par-three third hole and went on commit a double-bogey, which was the only blemish on her scorecard over the first 13 holes. She then had a bogey on the par-four 14th and sandwiched in a birdie in-between bogies on No. 16 and No. 18 to close out her day. A West Hartford, Conn., product, Janangelo is tied for 13th in the individual action.
After missing the last tournament due to playing in the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship, junior Anna Grzebien totaled her second-worst score of the season with a 79 on Friday and is tied for 22nd. From holes No. 3-9, Grzebien suffered six bogies, but rebounded to play the final nine holes at one-over-par to finish with a 79.
Duke will begin teeing off on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. along with N.C. State and Florida State for round two.
