PINEHURST, N.C. ? Top-ranked Duke increased its first round lead of eight strokes to 17 on Saturday as the Blue Devils turned in a team-best round of 297 at the 2006 ACC Women's Golf Championship being played at the Par 72, 6,293-Yard Pinehurst #8 Golf Course in Pinehurst, N.C. Freshman Amanda Blumenherst continues to lead the individual action by five strokes as she is looking to become the 10th Blue Devil to in individual medalist honors at the ACC Championship.
Duke owns a two-day toal of 591 and leads by 17 strokes over Virginia (608) with Florida State (609), Maryland (612), N.C. State (614), Wake Forest (616), North Carolina (621), Miami (626) and Boston College (653) rounding out the field. The Blue Devils are looking to claim their 11th straight ACC title.
"I think we are doing fine," says Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks following the second round. "We are so thankful to be playing at (Pinehurst) No. 8 and to be training on a course of this magnitude, especially with the windy conditions that were on display today. But we do need to get tougher. We are playing okay, but I would like to see us play at the level at which I know we can play."
Blumenherst, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., fired her second straight under-par round on Saturday as the freshman turned in a 71 and leads by eight strokes over Jaclyn Burch of Florida State and Leah Wigger of Virginia. She opened play in the second round with three consecutive pars before suffering bogies on No. 4 and No. 5. Blumenherst settled down to play her final 13 holes at three-under-par, including registering birdies on both par-fives on the back nine. Over the first two days, Blumenherst has played the back nine at five-under-par.
"Amanda hits it hard, straight and has a good ball flight," said Brooks. "When your ball flight is straight as well as being low and hard, it leads to the wind not effecting it as much as everyone else. She is also hitting a lot of greens and making her putts."
Sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi continued her excellent play as she collected a 74 on Saturday and is tied for fourth with a 149. A product of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi played her first 11 holes at one-under-par as she notched a birdie on the par-four seventh hole, but closed out the day with bogies on No. 12, No. 14 and No. 16.
Duke's lone senior, Liz Janangelo, continued to struggle to make birdies on day two finishing with a 77 and is tied for 13th with a 153. Janangelo, who is from West Hartford, Conn., opened play with a birdie on the par-five second hole and was one-under-par through three holes before finishing off the day with six bogies and no more birdies. Over 36 holes the 2004 National Player of the Year, Janangelo has mananged only two birdies.
After totaling an 80 in the opening round on Friday, junior Anna Grzebien rebounded with a 75 on Saturday and is tied for 17th along with freshman Jennie Lee at 155. Grzebien, the 2005 NCAA Individual Champion and product of Narragansett, R.I., birdied three of four par-fives but also had six bogies on the day. Lee, who kicked off her first ACC Championship with a 74 on day one, struggled on Saturday finishing with an 81. She started off on the wrong foot as she triple-bogied the first hole before playing her final 17 holes at six-over-par.
"We are getting exactly what we wanted from this tournament in preparation for the NCAA Regionals and National Championship," said Brooks. "The course is not playing particulary long and if it were a little longer we might be closer to par. This is not a course that I would expect us to shoot under par on."
Duke will begin teeing off on Sunday morning at 9:40 a.m. along with Virginia and Florida State for the final round.
"They know what to do [going into the final round]," said Brooks. "They have learned a lot over the first two rounds and good golfers are going to get better on good golf courses."- d - u - k - e -
