DURHAM, N.C. ? The seventh-ranked Duke women's tennis team cruised to a 4-1 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Florida State Friday at the Seminoles' Scott Speicher Tennis Center. With three teams added to the league in the last two years, Duke posted its highest number of conference wins in a season with an ACC-leading 9-1 record. The Blue Devils (16-5 overall) sit at the top of the ACC standings and will challenge Miami Sunday for the top seed in the ACC Tournament. Florida State drops to 9-12 and 2-9 in the ACC.
Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth earned his 225th victory in his 10th year with the Blue Devils and now sports an overall record of 225-46 (.830). Ashworth boasts the best winning record in the history of the ACC, having won 90 percent of regular-season conference matches (72-8) in the last 10 years.
Duke earned the early lead by winning the doubles point. Freshmen Tara Iyer and Jessi Robinson gave up a tough 9-7 decision to Alina Mihailescu and Tapiwa Marbola at No. 3 to start things off, but Duke answered at the top two courts to clinch the point. A pair of junoirs -- Daniela Bercek and Jennifer Zika -- picked up an 8-5 win at No.1 over Nicola Slater and Whitney Eber, and the senior/freshman tandem of Jackie Carleton and Melissa Mang outlasted Suzanna Mansour and Ania Rynarzewska, 8-4.
In singles, Bercek and Carleton won swift, successive victories at the top two positions, as neither dropped more than three games in both sets. Bercek started, finishing off Rynarzewska, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 and Carleton claimed a 6-1, 6-1, victory at No. 2 over Mihailescu.
Florida State gained its only point at No. 5, when Lisa Nystrom Skold edged Robinson, 7-5, in the first set before winning, 6-3, in the second. After Clelia Deltour sealed the win on court six by responding from a first-set 6-3 deficit to win 6-1, 6-0, in the next two, Mang and Iyer's matches were abandoned on courts three and four, respectively.
Mang also rallied from a first set 6-4 loss to take the next 6-2, and led, 5-2, in the third when the match was stopped. Iyer split her first two matches as well, winning the first and falling in the second, and she led when play was stopped in the third.
The Blue Devils close the regular season at No. 13 Miami Sunday at 10 a.m. in a fight for the regular season championship and the top seed in this year's ACC Tournament.
