CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? The ACC women's tennis regular season ended Sunday, with No. 13 Miami edging No. 7 Duke, 4-2, at Miami. Both teams had been ranked as high as No. 5 earlier in the season, and the match featured an upset of the nation's fifth-ranked doubles team by Duke's Daniela Bercek and Jennifer Zika and four singles matches between ranked players, including a top-10 matchup on court one. Duke and Miami both finished with 9-2 ACC records, while Miami improved to 17-5 overall and Duke moved to 16-6.
The contest got off to a good start for the Blue Devils in doubles. Jackie Carleton and Melissa Mang teamed to defeat Miami's pair of Monika Dancevic and Audrey Banada at No. 2, and Bercek and Zika followed that with their biggest upset of the year at the top flight, downing No. 5 Melissa Applebaum and Audra Cohen, 8-7. Tara Iyer and Jessi Robinson put up a hard fight but lost in a tiebreaker at the third position to Caren Seenauth and Patricia Starzyk.
Miami came back in singles, winning three straight matches to go up 3-1. Second-ranked Cohen topped No. 6 Bercek at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0, and Seenauth posted a 6-1, 6-1, win over Robinson* at No. 6 to start off the singles competition. At the third position, No. 112 Dancevic brought Mang's six-match win streak to an end, handing the Blue Devil freshman just her third dual loss of the season and her second in conference play.
Twenty-ninth ranked Carleton kept the Blue Devils alive with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over No. 63 Applebaum on court two to extend her singles win streak to seven matches, the longest of her career. The Hurricanes fought back, and Starzyk outlasted Duke's Clelia Deltour, 7-6 in the first set and 6-4 in the second to clinch the match at No. 5. After the clincher, the match at court four between Iyer and Banada with Iyer leading 3-0 in the third set.
With regular-season play concluded, the Blue Devils can focus on the 2006 ACC Tournament which starts Thursday in Cary, N.C.
