DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke track and field team heads to its final meet before the 2006 ACC Championships this weekend when the Blue Devils travel to the University of Tennessee for the 40th annual Sea Ray Relays. Duke will join an expected group of 2,000 athletes from the collegiate and professional level Friday and Saturday.
A total of 11 Blue Devils have already qualified for NCAA regional and championship competition. Sophomore Chris Spooner leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with his 1500m time of 3:46.33, and Mark Dellavolpe is one of four regional qualifiers in the conference with his best throw of 203-6.
For the women, seniors Clara Horowitz and Sally Meyerhoff each have NCAA automatic times in the 10,000m (33:05.37 and 33:39.53, respectively), and another senior, Laura Stanley, has posted a provisional time with her 34:32.66. A number of Duke competitors have also qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Championships, held May 12-14 at Princeton. Duke's student-athletes will look to improve upon qualifying times and set new ones this weekend.
Several Duke runners who are not traveling to the Sea Ray Relays will make a short trip down the road to compete at the Carolina Fast Times Saturday at North Carolina.
