Durham, N.C. - Leigh Jester was tabbed National Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com on Monday after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of wins over top-10 teams.
Jester scored two goals and assisted four others to help Duke snap No. 1 Northwestern's 31-game winning streak with a 16-10 victory on Friday. She also tallied just four shots in the contest. She became just the sixth player in Duke history to record four or more assists in the game. The feat has now been accomplished 10 times in school history. She is the seventh player to record six or more points in a game and fifth to do it this season, joining Katie Chrest, Rachel Sanford, Kristen Waagbo and Carolyn Davis. The win over Northwestern was just the second time the Blue Devils have defeated a No. 1 team. They upset Maryland 9-8 in 2002.
The Blue Devils had to come right back and play their second game in three days on Sunday. They hosted No. 10 Notre Dame and Jester again had a strong performance. She led the Duke squad with three goals in the game and recorded one draw control to help the Blue Devils to an 11-10 win over the Fighting Irish. Duke found themselves trailing at the half for the first time this season but Jester tied the game at 8-8 with a goal at the 21:35 mark in the second half and then gave them a 10-8 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. Her two goals were part of a 5-0 run that brought them from two down to a three-goal lead.
Jester is the second player this season to earn National Player of the Week for the Blue Devils. She joins Waagbo who received the honor two weeks in a row. Waagbo was tabbed player of the week by womenslacrosse.com on March 14 and Inside Lacrosse on March 20.
Duke's two wins over the weekend helped them climb to the No. 1 spot in three different spots, including the Bounce Entertainment/Inside Lacrosse media poll, the LaxMagazine top-20 and the STX Lacrosse IWLCA poll this week. It is the first time since 2002 that the Blue Devils received top billing. Jester and the No. 1 Blue Devils will take to the road on Saturday for their final ACC contest of the regular season as they take on Boston College in Newton, Mass. at 1 p.m.
