DURHAM, N.C. - No. 2 Duke outscored Duquesne 14-2 in the first half and went on to claim a 19-8 victory over the Dukes on Saturday at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start, scoring six goals over a nine-minute span to start the game. Carolyn Davis, a freshman from Skaneateles, N.Y., scored her seventh goal of the year just 34 seconds in to the game to start the run. Kristen Waagbo had two goals and two assists during the stretch while Katie Chrest scored a pair of goals and assisted on another.
Duquesne got on the board at the 20:40 mark with a goal by Krista Mann, but Duke would answer by scoring eight consecutive goals before Alison Smith put one in with four seconds left in the first half to bring the score to 14-2. The Dukes had a more productive second half with six goals but it was not enough as the Blue Devil's offense netted five scores and closed out the game for a 19-8 win.
Chrest and Waagbo each had big days for the Blue Devils as they improve to 4-0 on the year. Chrest, a senior from Hampstead, Md., led all scorers with five goals and also tallied two assists to give her a season-high seven points for the game. Waagbo, a junior from Ellicott City, Md., scored three goals in the contest to go along with three assists. Davis finished the contest with four goals as eight different players scored in the game for Duke and six different players recorded assists. Meeghan Ford, a junior from Rochester, N.H., scored the first two goals of her career while Kim Wathey, a junior from South Huntington, N.Y. recorded her first two career assists.
The two assists on the day for Chrest move her past Lauren Gallagher for third on Duke's career assists list. Chrest now has 54 career assists and is nine shy of tying Kate Soulier for second all-time.
Megan Huether improved to 4-0 in net for Duke this season with seven saves in 42:35 minutes. Kim Imbesi, a freshman out of Bridgewater, N.J., and Regan Bosch, a sophomore from Annapolis, Md., also saw time in net for the Blue Devils. Meredith Norris played all 60 minutes in goal for Duquesne, recording seven saves in the loss as the Dukes drop to 2-2 on the year.
The Blue Devils will be in action again on Wednesday, when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for an ACC contest against No. 4 North Carolina. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
