FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? Senior Clara Horowitz tied the highest finish for a Duke women's track and field performer at the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas Friday, besting her own school record in the 5,000m by nearly 12 seconds to take the silver medal, less than a second outside of first place. Horowitz, who ran her last 200m in 31.8 seconds, qualified for the NCAA Championships with a school-record 16:04.35 5K, good enough to give her a 10th-place seeding, but the Berkeley, Calif., native finished second Friday in 15:52.47.
Horowitz is now a four-time All-America, earning the honor at the NCAA outdoor championships in 2004, cross country in 2004 and 2005 and indoor track in 2006. She tied the best finish by a Blue Devil at an NCAA championship meet, as Shannon Rowbury took second in the mile last year. Arizona State's Amy Hastings took gold in the 5K Friday, crossing the line in 15:51.63.
Horowitz was joined at this year's NCAA Championships by junior Debra Vento, who appeared in her fifth championship meet in as many tries. The Marlboro, N.J., native jumped 5-9.25 in the high jump to finish 14th.
The Blue Devils begin their outdoor track and field season March 24-25 at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C.
