COLLEGE PARK, Md. --The Duke men's swimming and diving team began its journey in the 2006 ACC Championships Wednesday with season-best times in both the 800 freestyle and 200 medley relays. The biggest improvement was shown in Duke's 800 freestyle relay time of 6:48.85, which was nearly 18 seconds faster than its best time heading into the ACC meet.
Senior Billy Pearce swam the 200-yd leadoff leg in a career-best 1:41.07, while sophomore Scott Champagne closed in 1:41.25 to finish ninth in the first relay.
Moving on to the 200 medley relay, Duke again knocked seconds off its entry time of 1:36.34, clocking 1:33.22 to also take ninth. Sophomore Ryan Packer swam his fastest 50 freestyle in 20.60 to anchor the team to its season-best performance.
After the first two events, Duke sits in ninth place out of the 10 competing teams with 36 points. Action begins again with 11 a.m. preliminaries Thursday in the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle with finals in those events and the 200 freestyle relay set for 7 p.m. at Maryland's Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
