TUCSON, ARIZ.- Even though the No. 1 ranked Duke Women's Golf team registered their second-best 54-hole score of the 2005-06 campaign, the Blue Devils concluded the Wildcat Invitational in second place with a total of 846, which was six-under-par.
Duke carded rounds of 281, 282 and 283 to finish six shots behind Arizona State (840) at the 6,134-yard, Par 72 Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Rounding out the top 10 were California (859), UCLA (859), Auburn (864), UNLV (865), Pepperdine (869), Arizona (874), USC (875) and New Mexico (876). Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino took home the individual crown with a nine-under-par total of 204.
The Blue Devils turned in a stellar tournament with three golfers in the top eight and four in the top 14. Leading the Duke charge were freshman Amanda Blumenherst, junior Anna Grzebien and senior Liz Janangelo, who all finished tied for eighth with a two-under-par score of 211. Duke held a short lead midway through the final round on Tuesday as the Blue Devils were five-under-par through the first nine holes of play, but finished the final round five-over-par over the last nine holes.
Blumenherst posted her third straight even or under-par round on the final day finishing with a 71. The Scottsdale, Ariz., product was two-under-par heading into the 12th hole but suffered three straight bogeys before closing the round with a birdie on the par-five 18th hole. A native of Narragansett, R.I., Grzebien totaled a 70 to close out the tournament. The 2005 NCAA Individual Champion carded a team-best five birdies on the day, including birdies on all four par fives.
Janangelo collected her third consecutive even or under-par round of the tournament as she finished with a 70. She opened with a birdie on her sixth hole and headed her 10th hole at one-under-par before suffering three straight bogies on No. 12, 13 and 14. The West Hartford, Conn., native rebounded to birdie three of her final six holes to post her third top-10 finish this season.
Lee, out of Huntington Beach, Calif., posted a career-best 54-hole total of 213 as she finished tied for 14th. She closed out the tournament with rounds of 73, 68 and 72. Lee totaled 17 pars on the final day to go along with one bogey.
Sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi turned in her second straight round of 76 to finish with a 233, which was 73rd.
Duke will next travel to Guadalajara, Mexico for the California Guadalajara Invitational, which will be played at the Guadalajara Country Club from March 6-8.
