TUCSON, ARIZ.- The top-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the spring season in third place after day one of the Wildcat Invitational on Monday, which is being played at the 6,134-yard, Par 72 Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
Attempting to play 36 holes on the first day, play was suspended in round two due to darkness with the Blue Devils needing approximately two more holes to finish. Duke carded a first round score of 281 and concluded the evening with a one-under-par score, which is four shots off the lead.
Heading into the final day of action with the lead is Arizona State (-5) with UNLV (-2), Duke (-1), California (+1), UCLA (+2), Pepperdine (+4), Auburn (+9), Arizona (+14), USC (+14), Tennessee (+16) and New Mexico (+16) rounding out the top 10.
Blue Devil freshman Amanda Blumenherst led the Duke charge on Monday as she enters Tuesday's play with a two-under-par ledger, which is tied for eighth individually. A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst posted a one-under-par 71 in the first round and with two holes left in her second round she is owns a score of one-under-par.
Both freshman Jennie Lee and junior Anna Grzebien are currently tied for 13th with an even par score. Lee, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., carded a two-over-par 74 in her first round of the day but came back during her second 18 holes and is two-under-par with one hole left. Lee used a three-under-par back nine to bring her back to even par.
Grzebien, the reigning NCAA Individual Champion, kicked off the day on fire as she birdied four of her final seven holes of the first 18 holes to finish with a three-under-par 69. The Narragansett, R.I., product is closing in on concluding her second round which was very eventful with three birdies, two double-bogeys and two bogeys. Grzebien has holes 17 and 18 remaining and is three-over-par for her second round.
Duke's lone senior, Liz Janangelo, is tied for 17th with a one-over-par ledger and has two holes remaining. Janangelo, from West Hartford, Conn., turned in a one-under-par 71 to kick off her spring season, but is two-over-par through the first 16 holes of her second round.
Sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi struggled on the day with a first round 81, but has come back in the second round to post a five-over-par with one hole left.
Duke will tee off on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start to finish the 36 holes. Then, the final round will take place immediately after.
