DURHAM, N.C. - Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis and defensive tackle Vince Oghobaase have earned honorable mention Freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News, announced on Friday by the national publication.
Lewis, a 6-2, 190-pound native of Opa-Locka, Fla., started the final 11 games of the season under center for the Blue Devils. He finished the year having completed 180-of-340 (.529) passes for 2,134 yards with 11 touchdowns. His 2,134 passing yards are the most by a Duke freshman and rank fourth on the ACC's all-time list for rookies, trailing only Florida State's Drew Weatherford (3,208 in 2005), N.C. State's Philip Rivers (3,054 in 2000) and Florida State's Chris Rix (2,734 in 2001). Lewis tossed four touchdown passes in the season finale versus North Carolina, the most by a Duke rookie since Dave Brown did so against Wake Forest in 1989. In addition, Lewis' 2,060 yards of total offense is a Duke rookie record and ranks as the sixth-highest single-season total by a freshman in league history behind Weatherford (3,180 in 2005), Rix (3,123 in 2001), Rivers (2,969 in 2000), Georgia Tech's Reggie Ball (2,380 in 2003) and Georgia Tech's Shawn Jones (2,078 in 1989).
A 6-6, 310-pound native of Houston, Texas, Oghobaase made an immediate impact on the Blue Devil defensive front in 2006 by totaling 28 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and one quarterback sack while starting all 12 games at defensive tackle. His tackles for loss total ranked fifth-best on the team. In addition, Oghobaase recorded a safety when he stopped Florida State's Lorenzo Booker in the end zone during Duke's home game with the Seminoles on October 14.
