Duke Quotes
Head Coach Ted Roof
On the expectation of this week being a lot more competitive:
“Yea, it sure would. This isn't what we do and this isn't acceptable. I am frustrated, disappointed, angry and this isn't how we do it and we are going to change it.”
On what makes the Navy offense so effective:
“They spread you out; make you defend the entire field. Once you gang up on them they make you play disciplined, assignment football and not only that, you have tackling space. You have to make a lot of one-on-one tackles and we didn't do that particularly well today.”
On the offense making you think a lot:
“I want them to know where they belong; I don't want them to react. I want them to get off the block, get off the phase and go gang up on the ball carrier and knock him backwards. We didn't do that today.”
Towards the end of the first half you went for the kick instead of going for it?trying to keep it a two-score game:
“That is exactly what it was. If we didn't make it; it was a two-possession game?figuring, OK, get a stop coming out of halftime and take in a score and it is back to a one-possession game. But we didn't do that, we didn't make the kick and as a result of that I was very disappointed.”
On the next three games:
“I am looking for us to bounce back from this setback. Fight, play with a lot of guts, courage and find a way to end up on the right end of the scoreboard.”
Sophomore Eron Riley
“We knew coming out that we had to try to score early because their offense was going to run the ball a lot and waste a lot of time. So we wanted the chance to win the game and wanted to come out and score early and often.”
On balancing the game by blocking and wanting the ball:
“It is in your nature that you want the ball every play, but I am a team player also. I help out Justin [Boyle], Re'quan [Boyette] and Cliff [Harris] a lot back there also when they run the ball. I am just a team player. I spread out there for everybody, I block and if the plays come to me I make them.”
On the Navy offense being effective:
“Their offense gets about three or four yards every play. Everybody just does their job and does it right often. Their offensive line is cutting the defensive linemen, their fakes are real nice and they make their pitches well. They are just a sound offense.”
On the next three games:
“I think we need to just put everything together-- the defense playing a good game, the offense playing a good game and special teams making plays. When a play is coming towards you we have to make them and hopefully we can finish this season out with some wins.”
Navy Quotes
Head Coach Paul Johnson
On today's win:
“We didn't do everything perfect but we we did enough good things to get the win. Like I told our guys, 38 is more than 13. It's disappointing that we turned the ball over a few times; I thought we could have put them out in the first half. You have to be happy when you win like that. The guys played well. Anytime you rush for 400 yards, that's a positive. I came into the game thinking we'd throw the ball some more but we didn't have to. I thought the drive we had to start the second half was perfect. It was what we needed. ”
On having numerous players contributing:
“We need to do that. We don't have any individual guys that are going to try to carry us. Our guys are unselfish and they block for one another. It's good to see.”
On winning a game close to home:
“Anytime you win it feels good. I told our guys today, the last two games we've played some pretty good teams. I think Duke has some really good players. Coach [Ted] Roof and the staff, they keep trying to play. They're going to get this thing turned around.”
On how the team came out in the first quarter:
“We've talked about this being a crossroads game for us. Since the first I was year, we've only lost two games on the road twice. We've never lost three games in a row. We made some mistakes but we made the plays to stay out in front.”
