DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Lauren Tippets sat down with GoDuke.com this week to talk about the upcoming postseason and life after soccer. Tippets, a product of Menlo Park, Calif., has seen action in 85 career matches and currently ranks fourth on Duke's all-time assist list with 21. Over her career, Tippets has notched two game-winning goals and so far this season she owns three goals and four assists for the Blue Devils. Duke awaits the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday at 5:00 p.m.
GoDuke.com: When you look back over the last four years at Duke, what things come to mind?
Lauren Tippets: The friendships I've made with my teammates. The wins, the big wins against Carolina, against Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. Not so much the losses, I really don't remember those.
GD: Prior to the Wake Forest contest on Sunday, the team had scored eight goals over three matches. What was the team doing better during that stretch?
LT: I think we were being more efficient on the chances we created. We focused a lot on scoring in those two weeks of practice, and that really helped. It gave us confidence, and also our runs were sharper and our passes were better.
GD: The team has nine seniors this year on the roster. Have all of you come together and tried to make a pact to go far in the postseason to conclude your careers?
LT: We always talked about it since we were freshmen. Our class really loves soccer and we would love to go far. We haven't established verbally a pact that we want to go far in the tournament, but we talked about how we can go far and how we can play with anybody.
GD: Being a senior this year, have you tried to take more of a leadership role?
LT: I try to lead more by example than verbally. I think every person in our class has taken on that role. The younger ones in our program are playing a lot so they need some one to look up too.
GD: What is the best thing about playing soccer at Duke?
LT: I think going out and playing soccer with my best friends. Even if I have a bad day, I have fun on the soccer field.
GD: Do you remember scoring your first collegiate goal?
LT: In a scrimmage against UNC-Asheville. I had two goals in that game and two in the next game.
GD: What is your most memorable soccer experience?
LT: Either beating Carolina last year or beating Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.
GD: Why did you choose to come to Duke?
LT: It's a great academic and athletic institution. I liked that about it.
GD: Did you have a hard transition coming to college in North Carolina since you were from California?
LT: I thought it would be a lot harder actually because I'm the type that gets home sick. I think it was a lot easier having an instant group of friends, and we were a big class and we have stuck together ever since.
GD: What are the biggest differences from Menlo Park and Durham?
LT: Menlo Park is a very busy area, and I feel like North Carolina a lot more laid back. They are completely different.
GD: What athletes did you idolize growing up?
LT: I always liked Michael Owen and Shannon MacMillan.
GD: What do you like doing away from the soccer field?
LT: In my spare time I like to participate in other sports like basketball, running, and biking. I like to do artwork like painting and scrap booking.
GD: Who is your role model and why?
LT: My parents. I am a lot like my mom. She likes to have fun but can be serious at the same time. My dad's easy going and always pushes me. They are the kind of people that I want to be.
GD: What is your favorite TV show?
LT: I don't watch much television, but maybe CSI or the The Bachelor
GD: What is your favorite food?
LT: Lemon Chicken
GD: What is your favorite movie or type of movie?
LT: Father of the Bride
GD: If you could visit one place in the world, where would it be and why?
LT: I want to go to Europe; maybe Ireland or Norway; those are my nationalities.
GD: If I turned on your iPod right now, what would be playing?
LT: Probably country music
GD: What is your major and why did you choose it?
LT: Math major; just because I like problem solving and I like getting a concrete answer.
GD: What are your plans after graduation?
LT: I might go to medical school. I am definitely taking a year off to possibly travel.
GD: Do you have a dream job?
LT: I always wanted to be a doctor.
