DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team added three highly touted players to its roster for the 2007-08 season, as Reid Carleton, Jared Pinsky and Christopher Price have all committed to play for the Blue Devils, head coach Jay Lapidus announced. The class is one of the best to commit to Duke, as Carleton and Pinsky are tabbed as Blue Chip players while Price is tabbed as a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net.
Carleton, a native of Naples, Fla., currently ranks third in the Boys' 18s USTA rankings. He has been a consistent presence in the National Open, as he was a Boys' 18s singles semifinalist in May 2006, a finalist in February 2006 and a quarterfinalist in May 2005. In July 2003, Carleton teamed up with fellow recruiting classmate, Pinksy, as quarterfinalists in the Boys 14s doubles competition at the Super National Clay Courts, and was also a singles quarterfinalist in that competition. Carleton will graduate from Barron Collier High School.
Pinsky, a Potomac, Md., native, currently ranks 19th in the Boys' 18s USTA rankings. The most highly-regarded male recruit in the mid-Atlantic states, Pinsky turned 17 this past summer and before that had dominated the Boys' 16s division on his way to a No. 1 national ranking last spring. Now in his first year in the 18s, he posted eight wins over the summer in the premier national events - the Claycourts, National Team Championships, and Hardcourts. Pinsky is set to graduate from Winston Churchill High School.
Price, a product of Houston, Texas, ranks 50th among high school seniors according to TennisRecruiting.net and was ranked as high as 12th in the Boys' 16 USTA rankings. Most recently, his tournament activity included a doubles semifinalist appearance at the U18 ITF World Ranking Event in October 2006. He was a Boys' 18 singles winner at the National Open in May 2006 and has been a staple in many prestigious tournaments throughout his junior career. Price was a regional champion and the first freshman to qualify for state competition at Stratford High School.
“Reid, Jared and Chris are good players, good students and all-around good guys,” said Lapidus. “They really exemplify what we're looking for in true student-athletes; they have excelled both in and out of the classroom. We're looking forward to having them on our team.”
Duke will be begin spring play at the Miami Invitational, held Jan. 13-15 in Miami, Fla., with the Blue Devils' home opener set for Jan. 24 versus Old Dominion.
