DURHAM, N.C. - Mike Grella of the Duke men's soccer team has been named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Student-Athlete of the Week by the Duke Radio Network.
Grella, a sophomore from Glen Cove, N.Y., scored the game-winning goal on a long blast in overtime last Sunday when the Blue Devils upended Wake Forest 1-0 to capture the ACC championship.
Duke won the ACC Tournament for a second straight year, and Grella became the first Blue Devil to earn student-athlete of the week honors for a second time this year.
The goal was Grella's 11th of the season, a figure that leads Duke and ranks third among ACC players. The victory pushed Duke's record to 16-3-1 and catapulted the Blue Devils into the NCAA Tournament this week as the top seed. Wake Forest was ranked No. 1 in the nation entering the ACC Tournament.
The Blue Devils will begin postseason play by hosting a second round game on Nov. 15, against either Brown or Adelphi.
