DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke University men's golf team followed up an opening round 297 (+9) with a four-under 284 in the second round on Sunday to move into fifth place at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic. Junior Michael Quagliano paced the Blue Devils in the first round on Sunday with a one-over 73, while sophomore Clark Klaasen led the second round charge with a five-under 67 on the second 18 holes at the Duke University Golf Club (7,105-yard, par-72).
Coastal Carolina leads the event with a team score of 570 (-6) with North Carolina four shots back at two-under. The Tar Heels held the opening round lead after shooting a 286 (-2). Dustin Johnson led Coastal Carolina to a six-under 282 in the second round to take the lead. Johnson shot 69-68=137 (-7) on Sunday and holds a one-shot lead over North Carolina's David Holzworth (70-68=138). Virginia Commonwealth is third overall with a team score of 578 with Old Dominion (580) and Duke (581) rounding out the top five.
Klaasen is fifth overall in the event after shooting 74-67=141 (-3) on Sunday. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native ranks among the tournament leaders with nine birdies, including seven in the second round. Quagliano continued his steady play with a one-over 145 (73-72) in the opening two rounds. He carded four birdies in the opening round and closed the day with 23 pars. Quagliano enters Monday's final round tied for 11th overall.
Senior Jake Grodzinsky got off to a hot start before running into trouble in the first round. The Cornville, Ariz., native birdied four to the first eight holes on Sunday before finishing eight over on the final 10 holes of the opening round. He rebounded nicely with an even-par 72 on the second 18 and is currently tied for 33rd overall. Junior Michael Schachner posted a tournament high 27 pars on the first day en route to shooting a 74-75=149 (+5). He is tied for 37th with 18 holes left to play.
Freshman Adam Long, the top-ranked player in the Golfweek ratings, recorded six birdies on Sunday and is tied for 44th with a six-over 150 (77-73).
Freshman Jeff Edelman and sophomores Andrew Giuliani and Justin Hare competed in the event as individuals. Edelman shot 75-74=149 to tie for 37th, while Giuliani (83-71=154) and Hare (81-74=155) are tied for 58th and tied for 62nd respectively.
