FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- Duke posted dramatic a 3-2 victory over second-seeded Georgia on Tuesday to finish fifth overall at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Senior Jake Grodzinsky and freshman Jeff Edelman both won their matches in 19 holes, while freshman Adam Long recorded a 3 and 1 win for the Blue Devils.
Oklahoma State defeated Lamar, 3-2. to claim the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship, while Texas A&M topped Florida, 4-1, to finish third at the event . The Cowboys have won the Match Play title in two of the last three years.
Edelman led for nine holes of his match with Michael Green and only trailed twice (No. 3 and No. 4). The Southlake, Texas, native held a 1-up lead with two to play, but Green evened the match with a birdie on No. 8. Both players parred the par-4 ninth hole to send the match to a playoff. Edelman navigated a difficult up-and-down on the playoff hole (No. 10) for a par and the win.
Grodzinsky dropped the third hole (No. 12) of his match with Brian Harman but got back to all square on No. 15. He took a 1-up lead with a birdie on the par-4 16th and held a 2-up lead with two holes to play. Harman, the eighth-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index, closed with wins on No. 8 and No. 9 to force a playoff. Harman carded a par on the first playoff hole, the par-4 10th, while Grodzinsky drained a tricky 20-foot birdie putt to give the Blue Devils the 3-2 victory.
Long dominated his match with Adam Mitchell winning the third hole of the day (No. 12) and never looking back. His lead swelled to 4-up on three occasions before he settled in to the 3 and 1 victory. The St. Louis, Mo., native never trailed in his match and held the lead for 15 of the 17 holes played.
Junior Michael Quagliano nearly posted an upset win over Georgia's Brendon Todd before falling 1-up. Quagliano held a one-up lead through nine holes before losing back-to-back holes at No. 4 and No. 5. He posted a win with a birdie on No. 6 to even the match, but Todd won No. 7 and matched Quagliano shot for shot on the final two holes to maintain his 1-up advantage.
Sophomore Clark Klaasen dropped his match to Hudson Swafford, 4 and 3. Swafford took the early lead with a win on the second hole (No. 11) and kept the pressure on Klaasen throughout the round.
