PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Two Duke duos posted wins on the first day of qualifying action on Tuesday at the 2006 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In a battle of top-25 ranked teams, the 25th-ranked duo of senior Daniela Bercek and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin defeated the 23rd-ranked duo of Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks of Long Beach State, 8-3. Bercek and Plotkin moved one step closer to the main draw of the All-American Championships with the win, and are set to meet 38th-ranked Diana Srebovic and Lolita Frangulyan of Florida on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. PT (6:15 p.m. ET).
Another battle of nationally ranked teams saw 46th-ranked Jessi Robinson and Melissa Mang come away with a victory over 54th-ranked Anastassia Lyssenko and Aileen Tsan of Sacramento State (8-3). Robinson and Mang will meet 19th-ranked Alex McGoodwin and Elizabeth Lumpkin of UCLA on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. PT (6:15 p.m. ET), in hopes of moving closer to qualifying for the main draw of the tournament.
Mang was also in qualifying singles action on Tuesday, posting one win before falling out of contention. The sophomore, ranked 55th in the nation, defeated UNLV's Nicol Dimitrova in straight sets (6-4, 6-0), but then fell to 110th-ranked Kellie Schmitt of Marshall after fighting through three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
Bercek is set to compete in the main draw of the championships, set to begin on Thursday, Oct. 5. The senior looks to have another successful tournament, as she came up short in the championship match in 2005, losing to TCU's Nicole Leimback.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships is the first of three Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2006-07 season, along with the November 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the year-end NCAA Championships.
