CORAL GABLES, FLA.-- For the second straight contest, the 23rd-ranked Duke Women's Soccer Team collected three goals as the Blue Devils blanked Miami, 3-0, on Friday in Coral Gables, Fla. Duke improves to 9-6-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while Miami falls to 8-9-1, 1-8-1.
“This is a great win,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “Coming out of the Florida State match, I was hoping we would continue to create momentum and stay on the attack. We started the match off tonight with some slow legs from the travel but came alive midway through the first half. We had two very nice goals in the first half, which gave us a good cushion.”
Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute as freshman KayAnne Gummersall fought off three Miami defenders and ripped off a shot just inside the top of the 18 into the far, right post. Gummersall, who is from Wilmette, Ill., notched her team-best seventh goal of the year and posted the tally in less than six minutes after entering the contest off the bench.
“KayAnne's goal was very impressive as we played a ball downfield to her and once she got the ball she was able to separate herself from the Miami defenders, compose herself and scored on sure desire.”
The Blue Devils didn't let down after the goal as senior Lauren Tippets, freshman Elisabeth Redmond and senior Darby Kroyer combined to put Duke ahead 2-0 in the 37th minute. Tippets sent a corner kick into the box where Redmond fired a shot from the left side that hit the post. Kroyer gathered the ball right in front of the net and beat Hurricane goalkeeper, Lauren McAdam. It marked the second consecutive match that the trio of Tippets, Redmond and Kroyer scored off a corner kick.
Kroyer, who is from San Ramon, Calif., notched her third goal of the season and the 21st of her career. Tippets now owns 21 career assists to move into sole possession of fourth place on Duke's all-time charts, while Redmond leads the 2006 Blue Devil squad with seven assists.
At the end of the first half, Duke held a commanding 9-2 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
The second half was much like the first with the Blue Devils outshooting the Hurricanes, 10-2, while adding a goal in the 84th minute. Senior Katie Roark blasted her fourth shot of the season from 20 yards that hit the crossbar and Tippets corralled it and scored her third goal of the season.
“Our back four played really well tonight,” said Church. “Their goalkeeper punts the ball a mile and they have scored a number of goals off of that this year. We played that well and they were not able to capitalize. A lot of our players played tonight and everyone who saw action did well.”
For the game, Duke outshot Miami, 19-4. Junior Allison Lipsher registered her seventh shutout of the season and 24th of her carer as she finished with three saves. McAdam posted two saves in the net for the Hurricanes.
“We played a solid game from beginning to the end and I think we are playing our best soccer of the season right now,” said Church. “I am now looking forward to heading to Wake Forest on Sunday to close out the regular season.”
A total of 20 Blue Devils played on the evening and Duke scored its eighth goal out of the last three matches. Prior to the last three contests, the Blue Devils had scored eight goals over the last eight games. Duke also reached the five-win mark in ACC action for the third straight season under Church. Prior to Church taking over the program in 2001, the Blue Devils had reached the five-win mark only two times (1994 and 1997).
The Blue Devils will next travel to 13th-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday to close out the regular season. The Demon Deacons fell, 4-0, at second-ranked North Carolina on Friday evening. The contest against Wake Forest marks a contest which was postponed on Oct. 11 with the Blue Devils leading 1-0. Sunday's match will have to be played from the beginning with all stats from Oct. 11 thrown out.
