WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The 23rd-ranked Duke Women's Soccer team closed the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season on Sunday with a 1-0 loss at 13th-ranked Wake Forest, which was being played at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Blue Devils fell to 9-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the ACC, while Demon Deacons improved to 14-5, 6-4.
“I am disappointed because I thought we got outworked here,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “Wake Forest outworked us this match and they had a better will to win than we did. That is not acceptable. They outcoached us, they outworked us and they did everything well.”
Duke started the match on the attack taking the first three shots of the contest by freshman Elisabeth Redmond and senior Darby Kroyer over the first 10 minutes of action. Wake Forest then had a flurry of scoring opportunities in the 19th minute as Elizabeth Remy fired two shots and Amy Smerdzinski had one, but Blue Devil goalkeeper Allison Lipsher registered three saves to keep the score, 0-0.
“We started off very well the first 15 minutes of the match,” said Church. “We got nothing out of it and Wake Forest started to believe they could play with us and they did. They scored the goal and we didn't. We got services in and nobody found the ball. It is disappointing because we haven't been playing like this.”
The Demon Deacons continued to control the match after this as Remy took another shot in the 29th minute and Wake Forest got on the board at the 34:53 mark as Kayley Fountain sent a corner kick to Caitlin Farrell, who headed in her second goal of the season.
At the end of the first half, the Demon Deacons held a 6-3 shot advantage.
The Blue Devils took the first shot of the second stanza as freshman KayAnne Gummersall headed the ball just left of the post in the 48th minute, but Wake Forest came right back with a shot of its own as Fountain that was saved by Lipsher.
Kroyer had one of Duke's best scoring opportunities in the 54th minute as she fired a free kick from 40 yards out that slid just left of the post.
Duke's Lipsher had another excellent save in the 70th minute as Remy beat a Blue Devil defender and had an one-on-one opportunity against Lipsher. A product of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lipsher made a diving save to keep it a one-goal match. Just three minutes later, Lipsher made another sliding save on a shot by Amanda Lebo.
Sophomore Lorraine Quinn and Redmond each had shots in the 74th and 76th minutes, respectively, but did not capitalize. Redmond had another excellent opportunity as she found herself open in the box but the shot sailed high over the crossbar in the
If the Blue Devils would have won the match on Sunday, they would have finished second in the ACC, but with the loss Duke ends the regular season in tied for sixth place.
For the contest, Wake Forest outshot Duke, 12-8. Lipsher finished the match with a season-high eight saves, while Laura Morse had two saves for the Demon Deacons.
“Ali played fantastic back there,” said Church. “She saved out butts as it could have been worse. We are a very good team when everybody brings it. This has been our season as we have been up and down with it. It is frustrating and disappointing, but we will come back. We have had games like this and we will come back. It puts us on a tougher road now in the ACC Tournament but we are capable of coming back.”
The match this evening was originally scheduled to be played on Oct. 11, but due to a lightning delay the contest was postponed until tonight. In the first match, Duke was leading 1-0 on a goal by freshman Sara Murphy through 52 minutes and 49 seconds.
Wake Forest broke an eight-game losing streak to the Blue Devils. Duke had not allowed a goal against the Demon Deacons since 2002.
The ACC Tournament brackets will be released on Monday morning. The tournament will be played at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. on Nov. 1, 3 and 5.
