CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Day two of ITA Southeast Regional play is complete, with three Duke doubles teams and six singles players still alive in main-draw action.
Duke started singles play Friday morning by going 3-0, as freshman Elizabeth Plotkin, senior Kristin Cargill and sophomore Jessi Robinson each posted two-set victories. Robinson defeated 99th-ranked Ana Jerman of Wake Forest (7-6 (7), 6-2) and is set to meet Yevgenia Stupak on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Cargill defeated Deanna Bailey of Elon (6-4, 6-1), and will meet Katrina Tsang of North Carolina, and Plotkin, who defeated Alex Jurewitz of North Carolina (6-1, 6-2), will meet Blakeley Griffith of Tennessee. Both of those matches are set to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Freshman Amanda Granson, senior Clelia Deltour and sophomore Melissa Mang also posted wins throughout the day. Granson defeated Miranda Gutierrez of USC (6-2, 6-0) and will square off versus Vicki Jones of Tennessee on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Seventy-sixth-ranked Deltour defeated Ghizella Schuttle (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) and will face 94th-ranked Anastasia Zhukova of Tennessee-Chatanooga on Saturday. Fifty-fifth ranked Mang defeated Kayla Schwenk of UNC-Wilmington (6-1, 6-0) and will square off against 78th-ranked Ashlee Davis of Wake Forest in her next match. Both matches are set for a noon start.
In the doubles bracket, three of four Duke doubles tandems move on to the round of 16. 46th-ranked Robinson and Mang defeated Robyn White and Lauren Imre of Louisville, 8-5, while Cargill and senior Jennifer Zika defeated Marlene Chemin and Ann Siljestrom, 8-4. Granson and senior Tory Zawacki defeated Ali Piacente and Ana Spivakowsky of Charlotte, 9-7.
Robinson and Mang will meet Jessica Giuggioli and Caroline Winebrenner of Kentucky, Cargill and Zika will meet Griffith and Zsofia Zubor of Tennessee and Granson and Zawacki will meet Ani Mijacika and Carolina Slage of Clemson on Saturday at 9 a.m.
After posting two wins on Thursday to qualify for the singles main draw, Goyer was defeated by Hala Sufi of Middle Tennessee State on Friday, 6-0, 6-0. Zawacki and Zika were also in singles action on Friday, as both lost tough three-set matches. Zawacki fell to Selma Babic of Clemson (6-4, 6-7 (1), 7-5), while Zika fell to Chelsea Albertz of Charleston (1-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Goyer also combined with Deltour on Friday in doubles play, as two were defeated by Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk of Kentucky, 8-1.
Mideast Regional action will run through Monday, Oct. 16 with all matches to be held at the University of North Carolina.
