Durham, N.C. - The Duke women's lacrosse team announced
Laura Anderson,
Katie Chrest,
Megan Huether and
Michelle Menser as the captains for the 2005-06 season. They also released their fall schedule.
“I am pleased to announce our captains for the 2006 season,” said Head Coach
Kerstin Kimel. “Each of these players represent the very best of Duke Women's Lacrosse: they are outstanding students; they are incredibly hard working; they set a tremendous example both on and off the field in terms of their work ethic, determination and personal character; and they are well respected by their teammates and our coaching and support staff. I am confident that together, their efforts will help our team reach our full potential in 2006.”
Anderson, a senior midfielder from Severna Park, Md., played in all 21 games last season with 16 starts. She connected on one of ther two shots on the year for a goal and also had two assists. Her goal was the game-winner against William & Mary on March 4.
“Throughout last year, Laura worked extremely hard behind the scenes to improve her game which allowed her to earn, maintain, and expand her starting role.,” said Kimel. “As her role expanded, Laura's leadership evolved thus preparing her to be a key leader both on and off the field for us this coming season. She is a great communicator and therefore can relate well to everyone on our team both on and off the field. I expect a great collaborative effort between Laura and
Megan Huether as we work to re-load and rebuild our defensive unit this fall.”
Chrest, a senior attacker from Hampstead, Md., is coming off a tremendous season in which she was given the Tewaaraton Trophy as the National Player of the Year. She was also named Attacker of the Year by IWLCA/US and Inside Lacrosse as well as a first team All-America. She was the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP as well as a selection on the all-conference team and all-tournament team in the ACC. Chrest finished the season fourth in the country with 4.52 points per game (96 overall) and tied for sixth with 3.33 goals per game (70 overall). She also tallied 26 assists and four game-winning goals.
“Katie was a unanimous choice for captain this year,” said Kimel. “She has been the leader of our offense for the past two seasons, so she is more than prepared to assume a more official leadership role for us in 2006. Plain and simple, Katie is a natural born leader. She is excited to pick up where our 2005 leaders left off by maintaining a high standard for excellence for Duke Lacrosse on the field as well as in the classroom. Katie understands that all eyes are on her and she takes that role seriously. She is excited and incredibly determined to lead this year's team through our challenging regular and ACC seasons and back to the Final Four in 2006.”
Huether, a senior goalkeeper from Lutherville, Md., also received several accolades as a junior last year. She was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and received first team IWLCA/US All-America honors. She was tabbed as the IWLCA/US Goalie of the Year and was selected to both the All-South Region and ACC first teams. She started all 21 games in goal for the Blue Devils and finished the year ninth in the nation with a 7.72 goals against average, tied for fifth with a .560 save percentage.
“Megan is an outstanding athlete who is incredibly well-respected by her teammates because of how hard she has worked to develop her natural talent to become one of the nation's best goalies,” said Kimel. “Her knowledge of the game is second to none; furthermore, her ability to communicate, direct and teach our defense is outstanding. These are the primary reasons both her teammates and our coaching staff felt she would make an outstanding and effective captain.”
Menser, a junior midfielder from Wayne, Pa., started all 21 games for Duke last season. She finished the season with 15 goals and seven assists. She was also tied for fourth on the team with six free position goals.
“I was delighted that our team had the courage to vote Michelle as captain in her junior year,” said Kimel. “They see great natural leadership and someone who epitomizes the Duke Student Athlete. She is an outstanding student and one of our hardest working athletes on our team. She sets a tremendous example both on and off the field and is looking forward to assuming a larger role in our midfield in 2006.”
The Blue Devils are coming off a season in which they advanced all the way to the NCAA Final Four for the second time in school history. It was the eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Duke. They defeated Virginia, 9-6, to win the ACC Tournament.
“Having graduated four starting defenders in 2005, we are focused on reloading our defense,” said Kimel. “One of our major goals is to come out of the fall feeling as though we have really drilled the fundamental skills and concepts that will help our defense to thrive this spring. We are also looking to enhance our offense. We return the majority of our starting unit and primary subs so we are looking to get the freshmen integrated into our system and build on the scoring success we had in 2005. So far, I am very pleased with how our freshmen are coming along.”
They will begin the 2005-06 season with a matchup at in-state rival North Carolina on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. They will travel to Maryland for a contest on Friday the 7th and then the following week they will play at John's Hopkins on the 14th. The next day they will play in the George Mason Tournament along with Penn State, Loyola, Delaware and George Mason. They will finish out the fall schedule by hosting the Duke Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 23 with Stanford and Syracuse coming to Durham.
