
Men?s Tennis Begins Fall Season at Southern Intercollegiates

Durham, N.C. - Duke will compete for the first time in the fall of 2005 this weekend when five members will head to Athens, Ga. for the Southern Intercollegiates beginning Friday and ending Monday. The squad will also be competing at the UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., from Friday to Sunday.
The Blue Devils are led by senior Ludovic Walter, who was ranked No. 2 in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings. Walter will be the top seed this weekend and will earn a first round bye in the tournament. He will compete at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and will face the winner of the match between Serguei Boulanov of Stetson and Florida State's Sam Chang. Walter finished the 2004 season with a 25-10 overall singles record and a 16-8 doubles record.
Joey Atas, a junior transfer from Ohio State, and Jonathan Stokke also receive a first round bye in the tournament. Atas, ranked No. 29 in the preseason ITA rankings, will be the third seed in the tournament and will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday. He will face the winner of the match between Ben Pauluhn of Furman and Vanderbilts Andy Mack. Stokke, ranked No. 53 in the ITA rankings, is the sixth seed and will play his first singles match at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. He will draw the winner of the match between Juan Pablo DiCesare of Ole Miss and East Tennessee State's Oscar Posada.
Ned Samuelson will be the only singles player competing on Friday in Division I for Duke. He will face Georgia's Colin Purcell at 2:00 p.m. Christopher Brown will compete in the Division II singles bracket and will have his first match on Friday at 10 a.m. against Ryan Farlow from Mississippi State. \
The two doubles teams competing for Duke both received top-8 seeds in the tournament. As the fifth seed, Atas and Stokke will face the duo of Insaurralde and Picardo from ETSU. Samuelson and Walter are the eighth seed. They will square off against another pair from the ACC, Georgia Tech's Blackmon and Rath.
The tournament will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. There will be one round of doubles played each of the first three days with the final two matches to take place on Monday. The first round of singles competition will be played on Friday. There will be two rounds played on Saturday and Sunday with the championship taking place on Monday.
