DURHAM, N.C. -- Head coach Kerstin Kimel welcomes seven talented high school players to the Duke women's lacrosse program. Liza Braun (Greenwich, Conn.), Carolyn Davis (Skaneateles, N.Y.), Megan Del Monte (Lutherville, Md.), Christina Germinario (Long Valley, N.J.), Kimberly Imbesi (Bridgewater, N.J.), Catherine Krom and Jessica McBride (Madison, N.J.) join a program that had its best season ever in 2005, winning a school record 17 games, claiming its first ACC Championship and reaching the NCAA Tournament Final Four for the second time in school history.
"This year's class may be small, but the talent and skill these seven individuals possess is exactly what we were looking for," Kimel said. "They are all outstanding athletes as well as gifted students. Each one of them will bring something special to this team and we are looking for them all to make significant contributions on and off the playing field for Duke."
Liza Braun (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) - Defense
Led Greenwich to the 2005 Connecticut state championship ... first team All-FCIAC ... first team all-state ... academic all-state ... two-year letterwinner ... team captain as a senior ... comes from an athletic family with four brothers that have played NCAA Division I basketball ... father, Ervin, is the founder and director of the Connecticut Flame AAU boys basketball program ... member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Kimel On Braun: "Liza has a tremendous athletic background having competed in basketball her entire life. She has great height, speed and intensity and we are looking forward to developing her into a great Division I defender"
Carolyn Davis (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) - Midfield/Attack
Led her team to the 2005 New York Class C state championship ... registered 73 goals and 72 assists as a senior ... holds New York state records for career assists (280) and single-season assists (82 as a junior) ... won a silver medal in the NY Empire State games in 2003 and a gold medal in 2004 ... four-time team MVP, all-league and All-Central New York selection ... four-time US Lacrosse Academic All-America... also a three-time first team all-league selection in soccer ... played one year of varsity ice hockey ... father, Jeffrey, was an All-American lacrosse player at Syracuse ... sister, Julia, played lacrosse at Union College and is currently an assistant coach in NYC ... member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Kimel on Davis: "Carolyn has had a tremendous high school career at Skaneateles and is clearly one of the best midfield attackers the state of New York has seen in recent years. She is a great athlete with tremendous speed, passing and scoring ability. I expect her to be an outstanding addition to our midfield next season"
Megan Del Monte (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) - Midfield/Attack
Team captain and leading scorer with 39 goals and 41 assists ... named to the Tewaaraton Team ... IAAM all-star ... US Lacrosse All-America and Academic All-America as a junior ... first team Baltimore All-Metro in 2004 ... first team All-Baltimore City/County as a junior ... two-time St. Paul's Athlete of the Year ... finished her high school career with 118 goals and 110 assists ... named a Tewaaraton Trophy Finalist for the Baltimore/Washington DC area ... also won three IAAM championships in field hockey and one in basketball ...played club lacrosse with the SkyWalker team from 2000-04 ... two-time all-city/county selection in field hockey ... father, John, played with the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals from 1979-1982 ... mother, Kathleen, played tennis at St. Joseph's University ... brother, Bryan, plays on the Vanderbilt rugby team ... on the Baltimore Girls School Leadership Coalition ... class president as a junior and senior.
Coach Kimel on Del Monte: "Megan is a terrific offensive player. She has outstanding game sense, passing and scoring ability. I am confident that she will be a great addition to our deep and talented offensive unit."
Christina Germinario - Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) - Defense/Midfield
Star-Ledger 2nd Team All-State ... Star-Ledger 1st Team All-Iron Hills Conference ... Coaches' Selection 1st Team All-Iron Hills Conference ... two-time team Defensive MVP ... had 45 goals and 36 assists in 2005 ... first team all-conference as a junior when she scored 29 goals, had 24 assists and a .770 shooting percentage ... also earned four letters in basketball ... averaged 13 points and six assists per game ... named first team all-conference and all-county ... second team all-area selection as a member of the volleyball team ... played club lacrosse with Steps Elite ... earned Maximum Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam ... member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Kimel on Germinario: "Like Liza, Christina has a tremendous background in basketball and has great natural defensive instincts. We are counting on her to bring speed, athleticism and toughness to our defensive unit. "
Kimberly Imbesi (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) - Goalie
First team All-America as a senior ... went 19-4 in goal with a school record 251 saves in 2005 ... had a .675 save percentage and allowed 5.25 goals per game last year ... named NJSIAA National Girls and Women in Sports Day Outstanding Athlete ... three-year starter at goalie ... career record of 53-9 with 652 saves ... three-time Courier News first team all-area pick ... three-time Skyland Conference first team selection ... two-time Central Jersey Women's Lacrosse League first team pick ... won four Skyland Conference and CJWLL Magee Division championships ... won the 2005 National Tournament Senior Division with the Upper Atlantic Blue Team ... also lettered four years in basketball and three in field hockey ... standout field hockey goalie with school records for saves in a season (345) and saves in a game (45).
Coach Kimel on Imbesi: "Kim has had seen tremendous success in the cage as both a field hockey and lacrosse goalie at the high school level. She has great hands and quick feet and we are looking forward to helping her adjust to and learn the college game. She will have a tremendous opportunity in her freshman season to learn from and work with (2005 Goalie of the Year) Megan Huether."
Catherine Krom (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) - Defense
Missed the 2005 season having had surgery on her leg ... 2005 team captain ... named 2004 Unsung Hero ... competed in varsity tennis at Kent Place ... Younger sister of men's lacrosse player Fred Krom.
Coach Kimel on Krom: "Catherine had a tough senior year having to unexpectedly endure surgery on her leg. Her recovery is going well and we expect her to be ready to begin fall practice in September."
Jessica McBride (Madison, N.J./Oak Knoll School) - Midfield/Defense
Led her team to its first ever Prep School Championship in 2005 ... first team All-America as a senior ... first team All-Independent Schools and All-Logan Division selection ... third team all-state as a junior ... two-time team Outstanding Defensive Player award winner ... first team All-Galaxy League pick in 2003 and 2004 ... competed on the Upper Atlantic National School Girls Team in 2003 and 2004 ... also a standout field hockey player ... earned four letters in track and field as well ... father, Mark, along with two uncles played golf at Stanford ... has three cousins that have played or are playing lacrosse at Georgetown.
Coach Kimel on McBride: "Jessica's defensive skills are highly impressive for a high school player. With her speed and stick handling ability, we will look to Jess to make an immediate impact both in the midfield as well."
