Duke University and Northwestern University will receive the American Football Coaches Association's 2005 Academic Achievement Award, presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Memphis. Both Duke and Northwestern recorded a 100 percent graduation rate when all members of their freshman classes of 1999-2000 earned a degree.
Duke's win is a record 12th for the institution, having also earned the award in 1981, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2003. Duke also picked up honorable mention honors on nine other occasions.
"It is with great pride that we accept this prestigious award for the 12th time," said Duke head coach Ted Roof. "I think it is a direct reflection of our university's collaborative efforts for commitment to the success of our student-athletes. Winning this award is a testimony to the hard work and resolve of our student-athletes and their quest for excellence in all facets of their Duke experience."
The overall graduation rate of the 103 schools that responded to the survey was 58 percent. The study involves the freshman class from the academic year of 1999-2000, including those who entered at that time but who did not receive financial aid until after their initial year, or who transferred from another institution and subsequently received a grant-in-aid.
