Inside Lacrosse recently announced its women's Division I awards for the 2005 season. Duke junior Katie Chrest was named the Attacker of the Year after leading the Blue Devils to a school record 17 wins and the program's second trip to the NCAA Tournament Final Four.
Attacker of the Year - Katie Chrest, Duke
The Hampstead, Md., native and Maryvale Prep graduate had a record setting season with 70 goals, 26 assists, 96 points, 50 groundballs, 54 draw controls and 31 caused turnovers for the ACC Champion Duke Blue Devils. Chrest, the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP, finished the year as the conference leader in goals, points and shots. She broke the school records for goals, points and shots in a season and career shots, while moving up to second all-time in season assists in 2005. Chrest powered the Duke attack into first in the conference and third in the NCAA in scoring offense, fueling a 13.61 goals per game average and 286-164 scoring advantage versus all opponents.
Offensive Midfielder of the Year - Kristen Kjellman, Northwestern
Kjellman, a sophomore Tewaaraton finalist from Westwood Mass., had 59 goals to go with 32 assists, while grabbing 46 groundballs, 65 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers. She was the MVP of the NCAA tournament.
Defensive Midfielder of the Year - Courtney Koester, Northwestern
The senior from Westwood, Mass. is listed as a defender but does much of her damage in the midfield for the NCAA champions, registering 73 draw controls and 44 groundballs and also causing 29 turnovers.
Defender of the Year - Bridget Eder, Hofstra
Eder is a senior from Baltimore's Mount deSales Academy who led the nation with 47 caused turnovers. She also recorded 58 groundballs and 33 draw controls.
Goaltender of the Year - Anne Sheridan, Boston University
The senior from Baltimore was a big game performer with a 7.15 goals against average and a save percentage of 57.3.
Rookie of the Year - Jenny Hauser, Boston University
The heralded freshman from St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Va. lived up to her hype as an Inside Lacrosse blue chip recruit by leading the Terriers in scoring with 54 goals and 16 assists and adding 36 groundballs, 26 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers.
Coach of the Year - Liza Shoemaker, Boston University
Shoemaker led her team to the final eight with an 18-2 record after a disappointing 2004 season marked by injuries and near-tragedy. The Terriers ended the season ranked a school-best third in the nation.
